Courtesy Posting: X URGENT or could be shelter bound- SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO- STUNNING, NEUTERED CREAM CHOW BOY WHO IS NOW 7, BUT STILL ACTIVE, DID WELL WITH SMALLER DOG- NOW IN NEED OF A LOVING, RESPONSIBLE HOME ASAP W/ BREED EXPERIENCE/PRIOR OWNERSHIP, owner cannot keep much longer. Please no negative comments as the focus has to be on finding placement, and we are Not the owner. Please help us find a loving, chow savvy home for very handsome Thor who is now 7 years young, healthy and still quite active and playful. We were contacted to assist with his placement due to this urgent situation. Unfortunately, the only owner he has known since he was adopted at 8 weeks just had to relocate to a new state. Thor is now living in an apartment where he cannot stay much longer. His owner is gone 12- 13 hours a day at work, and due to personal reasons, is not able to walk him before or afterwards, nor is anyone available to walk him regularly while the owner is at work extended hours either. Thor and his female owner previously lived in a home with a yard he could run and play in, and rarely barked all these years. However, with the owner gone half the day, and no one to regularly walk or exercise him, Thor has started to bark at sounds and neighboring tenants he hears. While he has not been socialized much with other people or dogs all these years, he did fine meeting a maintenance man who came into the new apartment and even gave him kisses and we have several videos with him from today (12/1). However, like many chows, Thor needs time to warm up to strangers and may bark and or growl at them initially, so breed experience is requested, and no small children in the home. He has done the same with larger dogs he has seen from afar so we are not sure how he might do with larger dogs, but a meet and greet would be requested. Please note Thor has also occasionally visited a family member who has small dogs, and he enjoyed running around with one of them, while ignoring the other who did want to engage in play. We have video showing how playful Thor was with the small dog which was taken approximately 3 years ago. Thor has been trained to sit and lay down, and will walk on a leash. However, he has also been said to be spoiled and his stubbornness can shine through because of it. We were provided recent video showing he can sometimes be mouthy in a playful way or when he does not want to do something, and we understand he has been like this since a puppy. This may be in part from pent up energy and lack of exercise and walks, as well as lack of discipline. The owner clarified he has never broken any skin, though. We were also told 'he is not food aggressive. He has allowed his food to given and taken from him at anytime with no reaction'. Thor enjoys pets and scratches from his owner. We have several more videos today (12/1) of Thor being quite calm after a family member visiting (and does not live there and sees him rarely) was able to walk him past others with no issues, as well as groom (brush) him. His mane was just trimmed. Thor was neutered as a puppy, is current on vaccinations, and microchipped. He is potty trained and has no reported medical issues. If you are breed savvy and are interested in meeting and adopting Thor, please contact [email protected] or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to assist with his placement. All adopters will be asked for a home check (which may be virtual), an application, a vet reference, proof of prior chows, and a signed adoption contract. Please note adoptions typically need to be done in person. However, a further away home who can arrange their own transport may be considered if the home is qualified and risk free.
