Winston is a 35lb miniature Australian shepherd. He was adopted from the humane society in 2022 when he was 6-9 months old. He is currently around 3 1/2 years old. Winston seems to have trauma in his background and has intense social anxiety and separation anxiety. When anxious or over-excited he jumps on people and nips them. When left alone he will howl/cry. He is otherwise well-behaved in the home (potty-trained and not destructive.) Other sources of anxiety include loud noises such as the vacuum or blender and it is best if he can be outdoors when those are in use. He has very high herding instinct and would be best in a home with other dogs who like to run and wrestle, but no other small animals. He currently lives with a cat and does well, but is prone to chasing other cats. Although he's done well around kids for short timeframes, it is a concern that he would jump on or nip a child and would do best in a home with teenagers or no children. After trying medication therapy and training with a behaviorist, his owner is unsure if she is able to provide the level of care and training that he needs. It is preferred that the adopting home continues to work with the behaviorist that Winston is familiar with, or seeks further specialist training. Winston needs a lot of outdoor exercise and play engagement. He would do best in a home on a farm with continued outdoor access to lots of acreage. It is likely he would excel as a working dog with livestock, or in agility training, nose work, or other type of cognitive work. He is highly intelligent. Winston is extremely loyal and loving. He is very cuddly and sweet. He becomes very attached to his person and would do best in a home where people are around him continually throughout the day. He's been trained primarily as a running companion and is an excellent trail dog with great recall. Please only inquire if you meet the criteria mentioned above and have the time and interest in continuing medication therapy and socialization training.
