Hello, Our family adopted a Norwegian Elkhound/Swedish Valhund mix and have discovered that his herding instincts from the Valhund breed make it very unlikely that we will be able to keep him. He chases everything he sees: our cat, our cows, our neighbor's cows, cars that drive by on the street, etc. He is super fast, very strong and agile....all good traits in the right circumstances. We live on 25 acres and have always trained our dogs (Elkhounds primarily) to use an electric fence system. This has provided them with a large area to roam-something Elkhounds need. This system will not work for Loki as his instinct to 'chase' is stronger than his self control to maintain the boundary lines. We have no fence system to keep him in, definitely not one large enough to give him the room he needs to run. Our older female Elkhound has not adjusted to Loki. He is loud (Valhund's also do a fair amount of talking), super high energy, and wants more from her than she can give. We've barely seen our cat since Loki joined the family. He is a beautiful, smart dog, and we strongly believe in the right environment (no cats, younger more tolerant dog/s, no small children as he also nips, and a large fenced in area to play and run) he can be a positive addition to someone's family. He would make a terrific agility dog as well. Do you think Loki might be a good candidate for your rescue organization? Might there be a family looking for a fella like him? Can I send you pictures and videos? We need some help. We've listed him on Adopt-a-Pet, the Lynchburg, VA rehome site, and the 4Paws Norwegian Elkhound rescue site in the last 2 weeks, but so far the 2 families who have reached out to us were not good matches (lived by busy roads, had a fence that Loki could easily jump and her neighbors have sheet). We look forward to hearing from you at the phone number below. Thank you!
