About Max

Max has so much love to give! His mixed American Staffordhire Terrier heart and Great Dane loyalty combine into the most loving and loyal dog you could ask for. Max also has a lot of energy: he loves playing fetch, swimming, running, chasing squirrels, hiking, and basically anything that allows him to get his yayas out and bond with his people outdoors. He is an excellent guard dog, and has the run of the house. He doesn't chew on anything but toys. He loves inspecting the groceries when you come home, but he's well-trained not to get near human food, and never snatches. He loves peanut butter-filled congs, and any chew toy that squeaks, although his favorite is a large 'rubber tire.' Do you have bugs or spiders in your house? Not anymore! He loves hunting and eating them for you. Max should not live with cats or small animals, but he loves dogs of any size! Max was a rescue puppy from a stray litter. Max had early fostering to as a puppy at the Portland Humane Society, so he's very well-socialized to adults, children and other friendly dogs. Max is neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on his license and all vaccinations. He has never bitten or hurt anyone, but should be muzzled for vet visits due to anxiety. Max also has some anxiety riding in the car. At home he only barks to alert, and appreciates having a treat tossed away from the door as you leave to distract him. Max pulls on the leash if he sees cats, squirrels, etc, but exercise and a bit more leash-training will help. He will benefit from lots of outdoor space to bond with active owners. He knows the following commands: 'Sit, stay, down, settle, quiet, come, slowly, get the bug' and understands a lot of words that aren't commands. He is a highly intelligent dog, very agile, and also has an amazing nose. He's had some scent training and would be a great dog for Search & Rescue, as he can find a single drop of essential oil on a Q-tip hidden anywhere in your yard within 30-90 seconds.
