About Marge

Adoption Fee: $150
Plott / Great Pyrenees
Age: Puppy
Sex: Female

Marge is a sweet dog with endless amounts of energy. She's good with other dogs, loves people, but might be too robust and boisterous for small kids, and even loves cats (maybe a little too much, she desperately wants to play with them the way she plays with other dogs and will chase). She weighs about 40lbs and is up to date on all shots until January '26, spayed, microchipped, and on monthly flea/heartworm medication. My partner and I have been working with her for about a year with a professional trainer that we can provide the information for, he's been wonderful. We did not know her breed mix before we did DNA testing to make sure we were giving her what she needed. She is Plott Hound/Great Pyrenees and is built to be tough as nails. With my chronic pain issues as the main caregiver, however, I am just not physically capable of giving her what she needs to be as happy as she can be, she's a very physically strong (and strong willed) dog. She has some leftover fearful and resource guarding behavior from when she was abandoned by our neighbors, which is how we ended up with Marge. She was left on a chain with no shelter and later left to roam to fend for herself during the cold snap of '24 in TN when temperatures were below freezing for nearly two weeks. As a result, she is permanently missing a patch of hair on her back left paw from frostbite (has been vet examined, hair just won't ever grow back). Because of this early neglect, she has some fearful behavior for new things and loud noises (trash bags, vacuum cleaner, etc) and will resource guard her food, treats, and tasty toys (bones, chews, etc). For protection of yourself and other animals, she must be fed and given longer lasting chewy treats in her crate or separated from other animals/humans until she's finished. She will growl and snap. As long as she is given her space, she's content. This is something we have worked on for the past year, but it is slow going. Faithful recall is hit or miss because she is incredibly scent driven and easily distracted, so most of her outdoor time is on the long line. Walking is mostly uneventful with some pulling and veering off to follow scents. She will attempt to chase after other animals and will pull on the lead trying to meet other dogs and people. Her reactivity is honestly just because she is so excited about everything (her back legs jiggle with pure excitement, it's hilarious), she's never been aggressive to another animal or human while walking or when in group play at the trainer's home. With more focused training, she would make an excellent hiking or hunting buddy. As for toys: she can't be left unattended indoors with anything that has stuffing or that can easily be torn apart. She is a hearty chewer and will destroy them and try to eat the fluff (this includes stuffed beds in the crate). Leaving her unattended in the house is also not a good idea, she just loves chewing. If you're with her during the day, however, she understands being told to stop. For whatever reason, she doesn't chew the stuffing out of things like this outside, though. Inside, she does very well with bones, antlers, and very strong chews in her crate and will happily go at them for ages. Marge will come with absolutely everything you need to get started: house gates, a long line for safe outdoor play, her crate, toys, leash, collar and current rabies tag, slip lead, comb, shampoo, and conditioner, treats and treat pouches (training and for fun), raised bed for outdoors, car seat protectors, poop bags and holders, and food (we feed Science Diet Large Breed).
