Say hey to Opal! This gem girl is an approximately 3 year old, 50 pound, AKC registered Australian Shepherd. She's a very smart, sweetheart, medium energy jewel who loves to be with her Person, to play with a flirt pole, and snack on healthy pup treats. Opal has been fortunate to live with a very experienced Dog Mom who has loved her and given her lots of hands on training. She is crate trained, has polite bathroom manners, and can be trusted to roam the house when folks are away (Opal knows how to use the doggie door that lets her into the fenced backyard.) Of course, this beauty knows basic commands (come, sit, stand, heel, stay) and does very well on lead. Opal has excellent recall, and does fine in a car. Current home: Opal has been raised with other dogs, and for the most part does great with them. Unfortunately, the other resident canines are very senior. Opal loves to try to herd them (they do not love to be herded) and she is a butthead around food. They found her just too much! Opal's Mom made the hard, but loving decision to allow Opal to find a home where she can have more attention and receive focused training with another herder experienced family. Making Opal and the seniors all happier! Forever home: Smart dogs like this Aussie gem with active minds like to have something to do or they get bored and make up their own jobs (like food guarding, or herding reluctant senior pooches). Opal is not high energy, but she loves, and needs to 'work'. They need to be engaged. Things like play, interactive puzzles, enrichment games (retrieve, 'find it', learning new commands or household jobs (fetch and carry), scent work, backyard agility. Or, for the more active or adventurous- runs (on lead), hikes, agility training, etc. Opal has done and enjoyed lure coursing and Fast Cat races. Truly, her Forever would likely be familar with all this and very motivated to do life with Opal. The bright eyed girl would love Someone who has had busy Aussies or herders and knows how to be a lead her away from bad habits and to become her most confident, secure self. Opal's Person will be a skilled handler and give Opal structured routine. Eager to work with Opal on her food resource guarding (when with other dogs), 'my Person' possessiveness, and turning into a lapdog when thunder or fireworks are about or at the vet's/groomer's office. In short, a Person with experience, not afraid help a sweet girl learn how to be a proper lady and expand her world. Other dogs: Though Opal likes dogs, she'd love the time and training and attention she could receive as a one and only. However, with that ideal experienced adopter she may do well with another confident canine a similar age and size. Because of Opal's dislike of loud noises and surprises, she would not do well in dog parks. Felines- Well, she hasn't really interacted with cats much, other than to bark at the ones on the cat porch. Children-Opal has never been around children and so we are looking for a home with no children or perhaps, 12 and older who understand dog language and have experience themselves with herders. As always, Opal will want time to decompress in her new home. She will need to get to know her Forever and become acquainted with her new surroundings and routines. Meetings with extended family, friends and other pets should be gradual, intentional and supervised. Opal has a sweet temperament. She's a gem indeed-has a very willing and eager spirit and ready for further guidance and direction. Opal wants to give her heart and spend best days with her treasured Person. The best adopters give their new family member time to decompress and grow familiar with a new environment and routine. They see the importance of investing time to understand their dog and build a bond of trust and provide steady, reasonable guidance and training. An adopter commits to slow and monitored introductions with new people, especially children, other animals, and new places. Opal flitted over to say, 'Hey there, Forever! I'm ready to be your gal!'
