BIRDIE is an 18 month old, 23 pound mixed breed pup who was rescued from the streets. We don't know how long she was living out there by herself but we suspect it was for quite a while. BIRDIE is a very sweet and affectionate girl who loves attention and has what feels like an endless supply of energy. She's still learning how to be a dog in a home, so much of what she does is fueled by curiosity and excitement. She'll need a family that understands she is a work in progress, but she's already proven herself to be a loving companion with so much potential. She's very people-focused and loves to snuggle, but can be a bit overenthusiastic with her affection. BIRDIE would thrive in a home with a yard, as she's still figuring out her leash manners and doesn't burn off enough energy on walks. She recently went on her first leashed run and loved it. Playing fetch with a tennis ball, both indoors and outdoors, is the key to wearing her out, it's currently her favorite activity. She has had a handful of potty accidents, but is generally pretty good as long as you let her out when she goes to the door. BIRDIE has started to play with the other dogs in her foster home but can get overexcited and ignore their cues or overreact when they correct her, so she would do best with a tolerant dog her size or larger, or perhaps as the only dog, if her new family is committed to helping her learn proper dog etiquette. She loves kids, but jumps with surprising force, so a home without young children or older adults is best while she's still learning her manners. We have no idea how she would be in a home with cats, but would probably chase them. After fending for herself, it's understandable that BIRDIE doesn't like being left alone and isn't shy about expressing it. With a solid goodbye routine and a treat, she now settles with only a few minutes of whining, though she may bark and whine longer in a new home until she adjusts. Right now, her foster family keeps her in a gated room with a bed and toys when they leave and she sometimes sleeps in there at night if she is keeping everybody up with her energy, but if she's tired out she prefers to sleep snuggled up with her foster parents. BIRDIE has really discovered toys, especially ones with squeakers. She'll remove the squeaker and shred the toy into tiny pieces. She loves antlers, lots of stuffed toys, and most of all, tennis balls. She's also food-motivated and already knows 'sit,' 'down,' and is working on 'stay.' She's a smart girl and eager to learn, though sometimes she gets too excited to focus. BIRDIE has a huge heart and so much love to give. With the right people and guidance, she's going to be an amazing companion dog! *To meet or adopt one of our dogs, you must first submit an adoption application for review.
