About Taffy

Adoption Fee: $325
Australian Shepherd mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Miss Taffy is a happy, approximately 2 y/o, 75 pound, spayed red bicolor Aussie mix with, her Foster says,'the heart of a lioness' (lionAUS?). She lives to please, and loves to spend time with her 'go-to' Person. Taffy has a try and try again temperament, eager to earn her 'Good Girl' badge of honor. She's playful (gentle) and enjoys stretching out like a lioness in a sunny spot on a chilly day. She's crate trained while family is at work, and tolerates grooming well. Foster Home: She came to her Foster a bit anxious, with little training and not enough socialization. Fortunately, Taffy is a bright, receptive girlie and has a proactive Foster Mom. Foster Mom is quite proud of Taffy. The sweetheart has grown very confident and now knows many basic commands (stay, place, stand, heel, come, leave it) and how to walk well on leash. Since she is a strong girl and will pull if allowed, Taffy's Person will need to be able to handle her on lead. Children: Taffy has done well with supervised kiddos, but because she can react to unexpected movements or sounds, she would do best around children 8 and up who are able to understand and respect respect dog language and boundaries. Other dogs: Like most pooches, Taffy is dog selective. She makes her preference known quickly-'let's play' or 'go away'. Her Foster corrects and redirects her immediately, and walks her on leash by unfamiliar dogs. Taffy didn't like the other dog in her previous home. She often seems to prefer calm, confident canines. It's best Taffy meets another dog before going to her Forever Home. Felines: Taffy is courteous around the indoor, dog savvy cats. Just give her clear boundaries about feline respect. Forever Home: A quieter, calmer home is a best fit for her with an experienced, calmer Person who is eager to lead Taffy. She needs a Person who will invest time in her and be hands on with be hands on continued training. Taffy needs time to observe and adapt to new experiences, especially if she finds them unsettling. She instinctively turns to her trusted Person for direction on how to read and behave in situations. Taffy will become an even more self-assured canine with clear and consistent coaching that doesn't reinforce her anxiety. Of course, Taffy will want time to decompress in her new home. She will need to get to know her Forever and become acquainted with her new surroundings and routines. Meetings with extended family, friends and other pets should be gradual, intentional and supervised. A fence is preferred, but may not be necessary for the right Aussie savvy handler. For the most part, she does pretty well with recall. Her Forever should be committed to helping her maintain her training and encouraging her eagerness to please and learn more. Taffy is ready to give her receptive, smart, loving lionAUS heart away to become Person's Heart Dog. If you understand pups like Taffy, and have the love, time, patience and knowledge to invest in her, she may be the best thing you have ever done. The best adopters give their new family member time to decompress and grow familiar with a new environment and routine. They see the importance of investing time to understand their dog and build a bond of trust and provide steady, reasonable guidance and training. An adopter commits to slow and monitored introductions with new people, especially children, other animals, and new places. Taffy wants to know, 'I'm ready to be your prode and joy!'
