Border Collie Lovers, Meet Ridge. We adopted Ridge less than a year ago and have decided he might do better in another home. We got him as a companion dog for my aging father but they didn't bond too well. Let me tell you the good and bad traits of this dog and please read the whole thing before you reach out to me. I will be very selective on whom he goes to. I am not desperate to rehome him so if it takes a while I can wait for the right home. Good traits: This is a very sweet dog. He is very mellow in the house, he is not a barker, he is not a chewer besides loving chewing on bones, he is crate trained, he is leash trained, he loves all humans, gets along with all dogs that we have introduced him to, he loves to be outside but has been okay inside as well (a bit of a caveat there). He gets a bit spazzy when he is first out in the morning but will sit still when I ask him to. He does not run away from home. He always stays by the house. He responds very well to a vibrating collar. Negatives: He obsesses about cats. By this I mean that he will stare at them for hours if they are around. He is very obsessed with our little female heeler and wants to herd her when she chases the ball. This is not bad but it detracts him from going to the bathroom outside. That has resulted in him going inside after we have been out for an hour because he would rather herd than use the restroom.... lol. He is not a barker but he does howl in the morning when he wants up. I have been able to stop him from doing this when I had a vibrating collar, but that broke and he does this very faithfully every morning around 7. If he gets up at 6 he does not do this. You have to make sure he has gone to the bathroom outside before bringing him in because he can hold it for hours BUT when he decides to go.... he can go for 2 mins straight! I really think he would do best in a home with an old dog or no other dog so that he can be trained without distract. He really is a great dog!! He is sweet natured and really wants to please. My guess is that he might do better without young children running around as my guess is he will want to herd them. But he never has tried to herd me when I am running around so I am not positive on that. He has done the farm for a bit and was obsessed with the goats and ran himself ragged along their fence. That was with his previous owner. They said he cannot be around chickens. He hikes well and hangs out well. He rides in the car well. I think he would bond to humans if he didn't have other active animals around. I also think he is very trainable. Sadly he won't chase a ball... but maybe he would if there was nothing else to chase. Hopefully this gives you a good idea about this lovely dog. Just got neutered this year. UTD on rabies. We paid 1000$ for him and have spent a bit on him so would like to get some of that back.
