About Willow

Adoption Fee: $200
Australian Shepherd
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

Willow is an incredibly sweet, intelligent, and devoted dog. She will do well in a household that welcomes a lot of attention from her. She responds to verbal cues well and learns quickly. Willow joined our family in 2020 after her original owner needed to find a new home for her due to personal health issues. She attached to us quickly, strongly desires to please us, and loves to be near her humans. She would not be a good fit for a family that wants an independent/more aloof dog since she will likely become the shadow of one person in particular, but the right person will appreciate her affectionate nature. We did find that she has separation anxiety, is nervous about people entering the home (she does bark), and she is often reactive around other dogs. The reactivity has improved significantly, but she still needs to be kept from other dogs on walks and will still react, especially when other dogs show interest in her. Because of her intelligence and desire to please, I do think she would respond to reactivity dog training, and this would be ideal for her. The reason that we are choosing to find a new home for her is that she did not click super well with our other dog (a much smaller Australian Shepherd). Because they do enjoy playing with each other, we hoped that their relationship would grow healthier over time, but unfortunately the negative aspects have not improved. Willow is jealous of our other dog and tries to get between our other dog and anyone who tries to show her affection. Because their interactions are often negative, and because Willow is the more dominant dog of the two, it became clear to us that we need to rehome Willow after we found out that we are having a baby this winter. While it is a very hard difficult decision to do so, the dynamic between the two dogs will not be safe for a baby. We have found that when she is around other dogs in our extended family, she has done well with all dogs (especially males) except one particular dog that also has a more anxious/reactive nature. Because of her reactivity issues, she would do well in an environment where she has space to roam rather than in an apartment. We would like Willow to go to a home with no children or other pets, and we would like her to find a family that will appreciate her loving nature and welcome her presence.
