Courtesy Posting: NEW ALBANY, INDIANA- URGENT AT NEW ALBANY ANIMAL CONTROL- ADORABLE, CHOW X 'NALA' ID #A0059252008 - DESCRIBED BY SHELTER AS 'SWEET' but Currently RESCUE ONLY - NEEDS FOSTER AND RESCUE ASAP! May be okay with cats, does well with male sibling she lived with who is also in need, can be fostered/rescued together or separately Help! The shelter is asking for help for Nala and her brother/friend Khan who are both said to be 3 years old. They are a pair of siblings that were surrendered together after their human dad was in a bad spot and decided for the good of him and the dogs to surrender them, as he could no longer afford to care for a pet. The shelter tells us they are sweet to people when given the chance, but like many chows, nervous at first. We understand they also lived in a home with cats and other dogs. The shelter has stated, 'While I think they would be fine together and would love to see them both go it is defiantly not a requirement that they stay together. They are currently in the same room and can see each other but are housed in separate kennels'. 'Nala is the more reserved one. She is 44.2 lbs. She defiantly finds comfort in people, but is nervous about receiving that love. She likes a gentle pet and lots of treats. She's very food motivated. We have seen no signs of food aggression. She has had 3 litters that we know of, litters we believe where fathered by her brother Khan as the other male in the house was fixed. She has had less handling so far than her brother and does improve daily, but is just not as outgoing as him. She finds lots of comfort in her kennel and is excited to go back to it when we are done being social. We struggle to walk her outside, she is incredibly nervous, not made better with the loud noise as we are located right next to an interstate. She is mostly fine walking through the building, nervous, but goes with some gentle coaxing. Monday, it was noticed that one of her eyes has become cloudy. One of our vets took a look at it and we will be starting her on some medications when they come in.' As an update, Nala's eye has gotten worse, and a decision has been made by the shelter vet to remove the one eye to relieve her pain so she hopefully will feel much better. 'Khan is the more confident goofy one. He's 61.4 lbs and full of personality. His coat was in rough shape, but he let me brush a good amount of it out today, so he is looking better. I would personally call him housebroken; he hates pottying in his kennel, but sometimes has to overnight. He potties outside like a good boy every time we go on his walks. He loves people and does want to jump up and hug you, something we are working on since he is a big dog. He really just wants to be held despite his size. We did try and introduce him to other dogs however he is terrified of them. He never showed any signs of aggression, but he did run away from them, even the small yorkie mix we tried to have him meet.' As an update, they later said, 'Khan was introduced to a small Pit mix (Spayed female) and did ok!' Despite this, he is still Rescue only at this time. 'They had no issues handling for vaccines or for vet checks. They don't love it, but they let it happen with no complaints. They have been vaccinated (DAPP w/ Lepto + Bordetella + Dewormer + Bravetco) but have not received their booster round yet. They have NOT yet been altered/heartworm tested, but that is something we are willing to do with rescue commitment. They do not have stray holds as they were surrendered to us. They are not currently adoptable as we have been unable to assess them with other dogs, something that we do require. They are not currently on a deadline, however if they start to degrade in their kennels in any way that may change.' 'Rescue only' means only a rescue group can pull them out of the shelter (they cannot be adopted directly from the shelter at this time, so you need to go through a rescue group) to save either or both. However, rescues need fosters and a place for a dog to go. Therefore, if you are interested to foster or foster to adopt either dog or both, please contact [email protected] asap or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to assist the shelter with their placement. Please notes rescue groups typically need a foster to save a dog. We will to pair you with a willing rescue group in time. If you have any other questions, the shelter is also happy to answer and told us, please have anyone interested reach out to Spencer Shelton at [email protected] and or by calling (812) 948-5355. We will be posting additional pictures and video of both dogs on facebook: Khan's facebook post is: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10167948703668125&id=783968124&mibextid=wwXIfr Nala's facebook post is: https://www.facebook.com/debbie.alder.14/posts/10167948748253125 Note: copy and paste each link into browser to view contents
