Courtesy Posting: CODE RED AT MESA, AZ (NR PHOENIX)- ID #A5152054 -MARICOPA COUNTY ANIMAL CARE, EAST LOCATION- RESCUE ONLY (NHO) - NEEDS FOSTER(s) TOO AS RESCUES CANNOT HELP WITHOUT A FOSTER. 'MOONLIGHT 'a beautiful, young 47 lb female chow, WAS FINE W/FINDER WHO HAD HER FOR 4 DAYS, even non reactive to cats, NOW SHY AT SHELTER AND NOW MADE RESCUE ONLY! NOW ON DEADLINE FOR 10/14 TO COMMIT OR 'May be at risk for euthanasia 10/15/25 or sooner if warranted' per shelter. THUS, SHE WILL LIKELY BE EUTHANIZED 10/15 AM. SHE IS 'RESCUE ONLY' BY A 'NEW HOPE PARTNER ONLY' which means She can NOT be adopted from the shelter directly, and New Hope partner must pull her out. Emergency/soon to be euthanized! We are in urgent need of finding a chow savvy foster, or at least a foster familiar with similar Asian or spitz breeds. Now named Moonlight and estimated to be only 2 years old, she was found at a home who took her in for 4 days hoping to find her owner. During this time, the finder reported, 'THIS PET DID SEE A CAT IN FRONT YARD AND SNIFFED CAT WITH NO ISSUES. PET APPROACHED SOURCE FOR ATTENTION. PET WAS A LITTLE MORE STANDOFFISH WITH AN ADULT MALE. PET ALLOWED MALE FAMILY MEMBER IN HOME TO LIFT INTO CAR. SOURCE DID NOT SEE ANY SIGNS OF AGGRESSION. PET GROWLED WHEN STAFF APPROACHED FOR MICROCHIP SCAN.' They also reported she walked on a leash and was kept inside with only one potty accident. The finder brought then her to the shelter on 10/3 in hopes of finding her owner, but no owner still came forward. Sadly, because she was a little shy as is so common for the breed, the shelter made her Rescue Only and put her on a short deadline. At the shelter, the notes state, 10/08/25 timid let us occasionally give gentle pets. Reactive to head handling. M/S: Very mild right hindlimb lameness noted, intermittent. Ophth: Difficult to evaluate due to behavior; no signs of discomfort or discharge OU; OD appears WNL, OS has absent menace response - suspect possible decreased vision or no vision OS. A complete list of shelter notes for behavior and medical can be found on the portal: https://apps.pets.maricopa.gov/priority/Details/OTI3-MzY5-NzJB . A rescue could assist with some medical too and we would assist them to raise funds for such. We are therefore looking for ideally a foster or foster-to-adopt who has some chow, Asian or spitz breed experience. If you may be interested in fostering, fostering to adopt, or helping in some other way (ie., pledging for her rescue), please email: [email protected] asap at Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to find placement asap, AND also fill out a foster application on https://dogfoster.org/ so both entities can work on pairing a foster to a rescue group to help. Rescues can assist with neuter and medical. Rescue groups may contact the shelter directly at [email protected] and by calling 602-506-7387 and providing ID.
