PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE BIO ON THIS DOG BEFORE REQUESTING AN APPLICATION. MANY OF OUR DOGS HAVE STRICT REQUIREMENTS FOR THEIR ADOPTION. Approx. 5 yr old male Beagle/Dachshund mix, 19 lbs. This adorable and sweet dog was named Gary after he arrived at Smidget Rescue from Tieton, WA. Emaciated and lost, certainly looking for his owner, he was picked up by Public Works (Tieton does not have a dog shelter) and cared for by volunteers until he arrived at Smidget. His foster parents love the dickens out of Gare-Bear and he loves them back, but he also seems to have enough love for any person he meets! This dog was definitely someone's beloved pet at some point in his life. Easy-going, friendly, potty trained, mostly silent (unless he wants out of his crate or he hears your car pull up in the driveway), Gary will be great as an only dog or an additional pet. Gary is intelligent and is food motivated but is picky about his food; his foster parents put wet food toppers on his kibble to encourage eating, and he now weighs an ideal weight of 19 lbs. He responds to both verbal and hand commands. So far he's mastered: Sit, Stay, Down, Gimme a Kiss, Go Upstairs, Go Potty, Get in your Crate - each one took only a few days to learn! Gary loves to sleep with you, lean on you, lie next to you, also likes tummy rubs, ear scratches, and will give you kisses on your mouth if you ask. He greets you when you come home with his tail wags and a jump-up until you give him a proper greeting. When he's done socializing, he runs upstairs to either chill on the couch or in the bedroom (he wants the most comfortable bed!) until you call him for feeding or for his next walk. Not a chew-toy or ball guy but enjoys the heck out of a pizzle stick. He can be in a home with a small yard or no yard as long as he gets in a few daily long walks. Confident on the leash, he pulls a little bit when he sees a new person he wants to meet on the street. Gary takes a minute to warm up to strange dogs and gives a warning growl to let them know not to approach too quickly. After a proper greeting, he gets along with all dogs that are respectful of his space. Waits for other dogs to initiate play, which usually involves a short game of chase. Wants to go on a car ride, especially if you are going to the dog park. Gary looooooves the dog park and the spaces to do his zoomies and of course, to meet new folks who might pet him. Quiet at home and rarely barks, sleeps through the night, can go 8 hours without having to pee-this makes him an ideal candidate for a townhome or apartment, in addition to a house with a yard. Can be the dog of someone who works during the day, as long as they have some Gary-time when they get home. Mature and trustworthy, this middle-aged guy doesn't get into the garbage, mark or chew furniture, so his foster parents let him have free run of the house when they are gone.
