We have a nearly 2-year-old male Great Dane named Marty who we love deeply. Unfortunately, due to a recent incident, we are in the difficult position of needing to find him a new home with someone experienced and equipped to help him work through a specific behavioral trigger. Last week, my adult daughter fell in our living room. It was a very dramatic fall - she screamed and flailed her arms. Our female Dane barked, and Marty reacted to the commotion by biting my daughter's arm, causing multiple puncture wounds. We immediately contacted animal control, who instructed us to quarantine him for 10 days but did not provide additional guidance. Looking back, this may not have been an isolated issue. About five months ago, my wife slipped on his drool and fell - she had just undergone ACL surgery. When she screamed, Marty became agitated and barked directly at her face until I stepped in. I now realize that loud or chaotic reactions to someone falling seem to be a trigger for him. Aside from these moments, Marty is an incredibly sweet and affectionate dog. He loves being part of family hugs, nudges your hand to keep petting him, and proudly carries towels around the house. He's AKC registered, up-to-date on all vaccines, and was scheduled to be neutered after his second birthday. He has been around other dogs, though he's not fond of small, hyper, or loud dogs. We adore him - he filled a huge hole in my heart after losing my previous Dane of almost 10 years - but my daughter is understandably afraid now, and keeping him is no longer an option. We're looking for a rescue, trainer, or experienced handler who can evaluate him and possibly help him find the right environment. I understand that rehoming a dog with a bite history is challenging, but I'm hoping someone out there can help us find a safe, structured place for him to thrive.
