About Dipa

Adoption Fee: $100
Alaskan Malamute / German Shepherd
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

She's a 5-6 year old mixed breed (we did DNA and she's the epitome of a mutt), about 50 pounds, utd on all vetting, spayed, chipped, and medium energy level. Unfortunately, after a year and a half of trying, her and our other female dog simply don't coexist well and we cannot keep her any longer. We've been trying desperately to rehome her since early this year and she's been advertised through several rescues with minimal interest. We're expecting a baby in the coming weeks and we've reached the point of considering a shelter because no other rescues will take her... we're giving it until mid-October to find a home or foster before we take that next step. The good stuff: Dipa is insanely loving, goofy, very playful and animated, potty trained, crate trained, knows basics and some advanced obedience as well, great off leash recall when at parks and on quiet trails, non-destructive when left to free roam the home, eager to learn and easily trainable, does well at the groomer as well as at the vet (even though she's a little nervous), is hilariously vocal with her excited awooos (she's got a lot of husky/malamute in her), and gets along well with our cat & the vast majority of dogs. *She is not the instigator at this point with the female who is consistently bullying her. Dipa's energy level is perfect for the average person since she's fine being lazy around the house on a rainy day but is also happy to romp around and adventure outside when you're up for it! The 'difficult' stuff: Dipa isn't a very trusting dog and it can take some time to work into her inner circle. She is beyond loyal to HER people, but strangers aren't necessarily welcome in the home right off the bat. She isn't inherently aggressive, but she is uncomfortable and it normally takes a couple consistent visits for her to accept someone. Once you're in, you're IN and she loves you like crazy! She came to me with some major reactivity on walks, reactivity with new people in the home, has nipped at a few people prior to training (never drew blood), and used to lunge on the leash. All of those things have been addressed and are easily managed now through training, but it will always require consistent management to ensure she doesn't backslide. I have been a trainer for about a decade and I've been working in rescue for even longer, so trust me when I say I've exhausted every resource I have. It breaks my heart to accept that my girls simply will never get along and with a new baby about to enter the picture, I simply can't manage it anymore and we're past the point of trying to make it work. Dipa is a truly wonderful dog, she just needs someone patient and understanding who can give her the ideal environment to thrive in.
