Do you have a yard, an energetic dog looking for a playmate, and don't really like to take a lot of walks? Muffin might be just what you need! Muffin is a playful and loving 1.5 year old German Shepherd looking for a forever home where he can thrive. Here's what makes Muffin great: he can be super goofy - whether sleeping upside-down with legs in the air, or being a bit of a clutz, Muffin will keep you laughing. He loves a good cuddle, and doesn't mind his paws, tail, or pretty much anywhere else being touched. He's also very smart and trainable, picking up new skills quickly and eagerly. He's fully house-trained and crate-trained, and he's perfectly happy hanging out in his crate when you leave him alone. He's also a homebody who doesn't really love to go for walks (weird, I know!), and prefers to play at home in the yard, so this could be a plus for someone who isn't able to do a lot of activities outside the home. He doesn't have a strong prey drive (just a strong play drive!) and has done well around calm cats and chickens. Muffin had a rough start in life so he has been working through some fear-based behavioral issues, but he's made wonderful progress since being in foster. His issues include some fear-based aggression when he feels very scared or trapped, which can lead him to lip-lift or snarl. His current fears include getting in the car and sometimes being leashed (if he thinks he'll have to get in the car). He is on anti-anxiety medication which has helped this behavior tremendously, but he would need a patient and understanding home to build his confidence and let him do things at his own pace. He is also quite leash-reactive when on walks, but is very friendly with both dogs and people when they visit at home (after a few minutes to get to know them first). Even so, he has a big, strong bark when he sees strangers around the house, so he's a great guard dog. The best home for Muffin would be one where he can continue to improve his socialization (ideally with a playful dog sibling), and with someone who is understanding of his fears and anxieties. He would do best with experienced adopters who are patient, empathetic, and committed to helping him work through things at his own pace - even better if you have experience with German Shepherds. Because of his handling sensitivities, a home without young children is recommended.
