About Bagel

Adoption Fee: $25
Corgi / Australian Shepherd
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Bagel is a very good dog with a huge heart. He absolutely loves kids-he's gentle, patient, and lights up when little ones come over to say hi. When he was a puppy, I always paired kids with treats, so now he gets extra excited to greet them and happily soaks up all the pets they give. When it comes to other dogs, he does best with smaller or respectful companions. He was attacked by a larger dog as a puppy, which left him fearful and defensive around bigger dogs or dogs who get too pushy. On walks, I give him space by crossing the street if we see a big dog nearby. That said, he lived for 6 years with a 35lb terrier mix, and the two were wonderful playmates. He was very submissive with her and happy to wrestle and play. He can be a bit of a grumpy old man with overly energetic puppies who get in his face. He doesn't love loud beeps (smoke detectors, fire alarms, sewing machine beeps), which he's convinced are pure evil. His biggest joy in life is fetch. He is OBSESSED with tennis balls-whether on land or in the water-and could play all day if you let him. He doesn't like sharing his toys and will destroy anything stuffed (squeakers must be removed immediately). He's very smart, obedient, and food-motivated. He knows sit, lay down, roll over, shake, high five, and 'couch'/'bed' for his place. He learns new words or tricks quickly and loves training games. He's extremely well potty trained-hasn't had an accident since puppyhood. He was originally trained with a doorbell to signal when he needed to go out, but he quickly learned he could ring it just to play outside, so that system had to be retired. He loves all people and thrives on attention. In fact, he sometimes has a hard time with goodbyes-if someone says hi on a walk and then leaves, he may bark as if to say, 'Wait, don't go!' He's an amazing adventure companion and loves hikes and swims, especially if fetch is involved. He's not fully reliable off leash (yet), though with more training he may improve. What he really wants most is to be by your side at all times. I am heartbroken to rehome him, but I'm moving out of the country and shifting into a more nomadic lifestyle after a breakup. I know I won't be able to give him the stable home he deserves. He would thrive with someone who can love him into his senior years and who enjoys throwing a ball every day. He truly is a wonderful dog, and I just want him to have the happy, loving life he deserves.
