Meet Riko - A Big-Hearted Boy from Aruba Looking for His Forever Home Riko's story began on the streets of Aruba, where he was found trying to keep up with a pack of street dogs that never truly accepted him. From the moment we met him, we knew he was special. With his tall, lean frame and striking brindle coat, Riko appears to be a Malinois mix, possibly with a touch of Mastiff. Despite his tough past, Riko is incredibly affectionate. Just making eye contact gets his tail wagging, and when you speak to him, he lifts his lips into a smile. Rub his ears, and you'll be rewarded with sweet kisses. He's a gentle soul who simply wants to be near his person - resting his head on your foot while you relax, joining you for peaceful walks, and getting along beautifully with other dogs. We were initially hesitant about taking in a Malinois, known for their high energy, but Riko has proven to be the exception. He's: Well-mannered and calm House-trained Trustworthy when left alone - no crate needed Grateful for every comfort, especially his soft bed Though the vet first estimated his age at 5 years, they later suggested 9 due to missing lower front teeth - a harsh reminder of street life. But watching him chase squirrels in the yard, you'd swear he's still a pup. We're running a DNA age test to confirm. Riko is heartworm positive, but he's asymptomatic and already two months into treatment. The rescue will provide all the medication needed to complete it, and he has no exercise restrictions. If you're looking for a calm, loyal, and stunning companion, Riko might just be your perfect match. He'd love a home with another dog, but he'll be just as content being your one-and-only. We aim to adopt within 40 miles of Elgin. Visit Doggy Has Soul Sanctuary on Facebook to see more photos and videos of Riko's journey.
