We caught a young dog who reportedly had been loose in Orangegate Park for about a week. I have had him for nearly a week now and know him pretty well. I have posted everywhere I can think of, with no responses. I cannot keep him, as I'm retired on fixed income and already have two malinois. He looks to be a mix of chocolate lab, pit bull, and maybe husky and German shepherd dog. NO MICROCHIP, NO COLLAR when found. Lost for ~2 weeks, posted, no responses. I named him Choco-latte. If you are interested, he'll need to have a vet exam, shots, and neutering. My friend and I gave him a flea pill already (simparica trio). Pros: He is incredibly sweet, devoted, and eager to learn. Although initially skittish, after a good dose of love and a healthy environment, he now follows me around everywhere and wants to be with me all the time (although he accepts having to sleep outside my room). Housebroken (relieves himself outside, very minimal chewing, easily corrected), good on leash except when excited (wants to run with the other dogs), generally good with other dogs. Good with horses. Seems friendly toward cats (he wagged his tail, but we did not let him approach). Skittish with new people but warms up fast (he'll cautiously take a treat from people on the trail). Submissive with people but not with dogs; generally friendly and confident with dogs but not fawning. Does not seem to have any health problems. He is very calm and low energy for such a young dog; happy with one (leashed) walk a day and a yard. Just sleeps along with my older dogs. Cons: He got on counters and into a cupboard and stole food. However, he has not done it since he got fattened up here and was corrected several times. He also got into an altercation with my male dog over a toy, and bit him (a minor bite, and he stopped quickly although he could have killed him had he wanted to). He is intact; once neutered, hopefully he would be okay with male dogs, but best home would have only females for now. He loves my neutered female, even though she tells him to bug off. My friend's male dog growls at him, and Choco has looked ready to respond, but he backs down upon a reprimand from me. I think he would be a fantastic dog for someone who knows how to do some more basic training, is committed to getting him through adolescence, and can give him exercise, further socialization, and a loving, healthy environment. I'll ask a reasonable rehoming fee for the reasons dog lovers understand. If interested, please respond today or tomorrow morning because I needed to grab the first Humane Society appointment I could get to relinquish him, and plan to take him in tomorrow (Wednesday) at noon.
