About Max

Adoption Fee: $50
Border Collie / Lab
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

We adopted him from the SPCA. He was found tied up in the backyard of an abandoned home. We are unsure the trauma he went through but we have broken down many walls with him over the year. He is still a bit uneasy around women, the high pitched baby voice, and unconsentual petting. He was a year old when we adopted him in April 2024 and was not housebroken. Our other dog taught him how to sit, shake, lay, roll over, crawl and beg for food. Due to overstimulation he flunked out of the Petsmart class. He was too old for the puppy classes and missed his window for proper socialization training which has made him more reactive over time. He has been a loyal dog who enjoys a routine and the freedom to run. He has a high prey drive and will play with his toys all day. He is a very smart dog who follows his older brother lead. He is a pack dog who needs a strong role model. We both work full time jobs and live in an apartment. We are rehoming him since we are not the proper family for him. *Disclaimer* He has 8 accounts of biting. 6 are his female owner: first time was when we first brought him home and was told not to pee in the house, two times included being denied getting out of the car until he sat down, the rest were unconsensual petting; one was a female neighbor who picked up their dog at the dog park, and the other is a female dog walker who went to wipe his paws after a rainy day. He recently slipped out his leash and instead of running after a dog out of curiosity and to play, he unprovoked went after the dog in an aggressive way. He was tackled by the owner before he could hurt the dog. Surrendering him to the shelters and spca will take months and possibly lead to being put down. *Triggers* Women make him anxious. 'Baby' voice telling him he's a good boy. When someone pets him without his consent. Dogs reactive to him. Squirrels. Kennel (will go in willing but difficult to open the gate to let him out) Things to be aware of: He enjoys chewing up soft plastics. He shreds water bottles, Amazon packages, cardboard, and gets very excited shredding plastic bags. He prefers soft chews and will have digestion issues with Collagen chews. He loves to soak up the sun and hang outside but nap inside. He has learned recall when other dogs bark at him in the backyard. If he comes inside without barking he gets a treat. Men can rough house with him but prefer toys when it comes to playing with women. He will try to 'buy' some human food with his toys. I can pick up his food or water bowl with zero aggression from him.
