It breaks our hearts to write this, but we're looking to rehome our beloved dog, Jaco. He's been with us since he was 8 weeks old, and he's been an amazing companion and loyal family member ever since. Unfortunately, a recent incident involving our toddler has made it clear that Jaco will be much happier in a new home. The Incident (Full Transparency) A few weeks ago, during a moment with multiple stressors (food on the floor, lots of noise, limited space), our 1-year-old son wandered over to Jaco's food. Jaco used his mouth to move him out of the way. He didn't latch or bite down, didn't growl or raise his lips-but as a large, strong dog, the result was a bite that left a mark. It was not an attack, but it was still more than we can risk again. As devastated as we are, we know the safest thing-for our child and for Jaco-is to find him a new home better suited to his needs. %BD%BD%90 About Jaco Jaco is equal parts mellow house dog and classic coonhound. Indoors, he's relaxed and peaceful-he spends most of his day napping, playing quietly with a toy, or checking in for some affection. He's never been destructive and has had zero accidents in the house his entire adult life. He knows his boundaries (like 'stay out of the kitchen') and responds well to both voice and hand-signal commands like sit, stay, come, and down. Outdoors, his hound instincts take over a bit. He gets excited and vocal when he sees other dogs or people-he barks, bays, and wants to run over to say hello. He's never attacked another dog, but his excitement and size can be a bit much for smaller or more timid animals. A fenced yard is essential-we've never had success walking him on leash due to his drive to follow scents and his strength when excited, but a backyard has always been plenty to keep him happy and active. Jaco has lived his whole life with another dog and has spent lots of time in multi-dog homes with my extended family. He also loves people-he greets strangers enthusiastically, then quickly loses interest and settles down. He's not anxious or needy and does well when we leave the house (a quick whimper, then he lays down and relaxes-he's always been fine on his own). %BD%BD%8F%BD Ideal Home %BD' No young children (older kids or adults only) %BD' Fenced yard required %BD' Experience with hound breeds or large outdoor dogs a plus %BD' Someone who appreciates a dog that wants to cuddle, but also respects a dog that's independent %BD' A calm home where he can be his relaxed, affectionate self %BD%9D%A4%BD%BD%8F Why We Love Him Jaco is endlessly loyal, gentle for his size, and emotionally attuned to the people he loves. He's cuddly without being clingy, happy to join in when you're playing but content to entertain himself too. He wants to be a good boy, and it shows. His goofy expressions, floppy ears, and deep hound bay are just part of his charm. He's been a steady presence in our lives, and we want nothing more than to find him a home where he can continue to thrive and be loved.
