About Laika

Laika is a 3 year old Belgian Malinois who we adopted from a shelter after she was picked up from the street. She was very thin and appeared to have recently had a litter of puppies. Somebody obviously put time into training her as she came to us already knowing many obedience commands, but she had no chip or collar and was unclaimed at the shelter. She is an absolutely wonderful dog overall. She is gentle, loving, and lives her life just trying to please her people. Unfortunately, she is hyperfixated on chasing and barking at our two cats, and even after working with a trainer and a behavioralist is not safe to be around small animals unsupervised. She also has some reactivity on leash to dogs and unfamilliar large men, though she does well with introductions to guests in the home. She did live with another dog (a female husky) while in the shelter so might do okay with the right canine sibling. She has a high drive to learn and work, though also does a fantastic job of relaxing when her owners are relaxing -- a really special combination for a Malinois. She is housebroken and does not destroy things during the day when we are at work. She is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. She is also muzzle trained for her reactivity on walks and will come with her muzzle. I have been using a gentle leader harness with her on walks and am able to control her relatively easily as a smaller woman, but this is something she could use work on as well.
