Kestrel is a sweet and happy dog, full of puppy energy and curiosity. He starts out his interactions with people and dogs in a shy and timid manner, but once he figures out that he is in friendly territory, there is no stopping his exploring, playing, and running around. He loves toys, the more the merrier - he has no favorites, and he will take turns playing with all of them. The home will need to be toddler-proofed, as he loves to explore, and he is not afraid to climb, go under, and pull, anything he can. He is fascinated by and still not tired of mirrors and reflections on surfaces. He has a very sweet bark and grunt and has grown more vocal as he has grown more confident. He barks/grunts in excitement while playing, when he hears a door opening, and from the car at people on the sidewalks and at traffic lights. He loves car rides (because they always end at a park, where he can sniff and mark greenery to his hearts content). He enjoys meeting and playing with other dogs his own size or calm larger dogs - he tends to shy away from highly energetic large dogs. True to his name, he tries to chase squirrels, bunnies, and small birds. His behavior with cats is unknown. He is very curious to watch people and wants to pause and keep an eye on anything making noise while exploring the outdoors. Once Kestrel has grown comfortable, he can be a big cuddle bug, and will insist on curling up on you, preferably in your lap or on your chest. He also snuggles other dogs and likes to bury himself in warm pockets of blankets. He's always excited for belly rubs and scritches, loves to sleep on his back, in your lap, or next to you on the couch/bed. His crate is one of his favorite places, and he likes it to be dark when he sleeps in it at night. He stashes some of his toys and treats in his crate, and l've heard a squeak or two in the middle of the night. Initially, he is shy of people who try to interact with him, and he seems more afraid of tall men. We've found that picking him up to greet others so they're not towering over him eases his fear a bit, and he'll accept his fate if put in someone's lap to get pets while he calms down. He's warmed up to men living in our house who have been persistently/proactively kind to him and very patient, especially in moments when his fear response takes over (e.g. he can't decide if he wants to growl or get scritches - sometimes he wants both at the same time, which is hard to achieve we suspect some man in his previous life was pretty mean to him, so he's steadily learning men can also be kind). I think he'll do fine as an only dog if his human is frequently home but probably would be most happy in a home with other dogs so he can seek comfort in furry companions when his humans go out for a bit. He really enjoys interaction and play time with other dogs his size and will thrive with opportunities to socialize with other dogs. I think he will do fine in a home with respectful kids (older than 5) and may enjoy interacting with them once he overcomes his initial shyness.
