We have a sad situation. I need some advice on a 9-10 year old chow mix situation our family is dealing with. My mother in law is in the declining stages of alzheimer's (diagnosed 2 years ago) and still has her once abused chow mix dog that she rescued at the pound 7-8 years ago that to this day no one else in the family or friends has ever been able to get close to without the fear of being bitten. In a few weeks or months she will be moving to an assisted care facility. The dog is very protective of her and seems to be more scared of people, but being scared almost always triggers the dog into fight mode (not flight). The dog overall is quiet and good with her (has never been a aggression issue with her), but no one else. I picked somewhat dominant on the pulldown menu, but it really doesn't seem to be dominant just scared of strangers and protective of 'his person'. Not sure if it could be trained. There is 100% no way anyone in our family can take the dog and we just need to know if this is a lost cause and the dog simply needs to be put down, or is there some sort of rescue place or person that feels this dog can be saved? Being totally transparent, I believe there is little chance it'll cleanly pass a non violent test with a stranger without some work. Again the dog is 100% fine with her, but seemingly nobody else. We live in the Phoenix Arizona area. I guess what I am looking for is validation that it needs to be put down or sending a message out there for someone who feels they can and have the means or ability to save this dog.
