PHOENIX is an 8 month old, 20 pound Australian Shepherd surrendered to us. He was the runt of his litter, is deaf and has limited vision because of poor breeding practices. Do not let that stop you from reading more about this sweetheart! PHOENIX originally came from a breeder in Atlanta that we took another dog from years ago. We were contacted and asked if we could help him too and found out that he is the brother of that dog. He is a double Merle, known to have sight and/or hearing issues. PHOENIX was kept outside with little interaction from what we can tell. He was afraid of touch when he came in but now that he feels confident in his foster home, he has really started to blossom! He loves attention and affection, gives tons of kisses, and loves being petted. He also loves other dogs. His best home is going to be one with another dog in it that he can buddy up with. It should be a playful dog that won't mind a dog that might walk into them sometimes! PHOENIX is special needs but they are some of the best dogs if you take the time to work with them! He cannot hear, but he can see motion and light. He watches you and will follow you if you're walking around the room. He does not see as well in the dark. He has already learned to use the dog door with no problem and he navigates very well around the house. Things like fences are hard to see, so he will walk into a chain link fence until he maps the area. He is working on his potty training but he needs some work. Because of his lack of hearing and sight impairment, we are requiring a home with a fenced yard. At night PHOENIX seems to be most comfortable sleeping stretched out on the floor, probably because of his prior living conditions. He's not used to curling up in a bed and he chooses to ignore all of the fluffy dog beds around him. PHOENIX has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, heartworm negative, has been started on heartworm and flea treatment, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. MORE about PHOENIX: He has not been around kids or cats since we have had him. He does have sharp little puppy teeth and won't be the best with a toddler or younger kid who can't understand his deafness and vision issues. Dogs like that can startle quickly and a home with older children who can understand him would be best if there are kids in the home. Special needs dogs like Phoenix can be trained with a tap training method. We will be happy to discuss that further with anyone interested in giving this sweet boy a home!
