About Tigger

Hello, my name is Tigger and I am a 1.5 year old Blue Staffy / Bull Terrier mix. If you don't know about Blue Staffies, we have a beautiful, grey coat that is SOO soft. And, the Bull Terrier is the Target dog's breed. I'm working on gaining some weight, and right now I'm a bit skinny at 50 lbs. My backstory is that I was picked up as part of a pack of 4 or 5 stray dogs in Texas. Unfortunately, the shelter in Texas who found me was super full and couldn't give me a lot of time, so I was on their euthanasia list, and that's when SHDR rescued me. As such a young guy, I've had a rough start, but I still love humans. Like my namesake, I am affectionate and likeable. I am a loyal and loving guy who wants to be where my people are. I'll lay at your feet while you work on the computer or look out the window from the room you're in. I might bark at things outside that window, because these big ears hear EVERYTHING and I want to protect you from things like noises outside or the doorbell ringing. So, I do bark and that bark is Loud! I'm a good deterrent, but shared-wall living like an apartment or condo is not for me. A single-family home is best for me. I am very comfortable with stairs, and I would love to be up on the couch or even the bed with you. (My foster mom doesn't let me on the bed, though.) I know what toys are - I really like the nylabone and the Kong toy at my foster home. Like a Tigger, I have some serious hops. I bounce around joyfully when I play, often throwing a toy in the air and catching it for myself. I LOVE to play fetch, too. When I get too excited, I sometimes forget my manners and can get a little mouthy, but I respond well to correction and I sometimes just need a little 'time out' to calm down. After all, I'm still a young dog so I have youthful energy! I am very trusting and let my humans touch me almost anywhere. I do have a sensitive spot on my hind quarters from where I got some injections that cured my heartworm. Just pet me anywhere else. I also have an area on my neck that is healing from the after effects of a pinch or maybe a shock collar. As a result, I much prefer a harness so it doesn't rub that same area. I REALLY don't like walking in the snow, so I'd rather go on a walk than out in the yard while there is snow on the ground. However, the sound of cars passing is still scary, so I'm calmer on a quieter street that doesn't have much traffic. My current foster home has teens, and I am great with them. Even though I love people, because of my size, SHDR is recommending that kids in my new home be at least 10. Given my breed and size, a fenced yard - ideally with a 5-foot high fence - is a must for me so that I have a safe place that is contained but where I can run and stretch my legs. I know commands like 'sit' and 'stay', and I take treats gently. I'm house trained and I will nudge you or walk to the door if I have to go outside. I walk pretty nicely on a leash, though I am still learning not to tug. I'm a social guy and I want to be your companion, so I would be happiest in a home where someone is home with me most of the time - like a stay-at-home parent, or a work from home person. I was crated a lot in my past, and one of my legs is atrophied as a result, so I really need lots of opportunities to stretch and use that leg to build the muscle back. So, I don't like to be crated for extended periods and so I don't like to be alone. (I will bark if left alone in a room for an extended period.) Although I have peacefully coexisted with other laid-back dogs in my foster home, I might prefer to be your one & only dog. After traveling with a pack for a while, I learned to guard my food and it's going to take a while for me to learn that I don't have to do that anymore. So, it might be best if I'm the only dog in the house. Please note that, while I might guard my food a bit, that's only with other dogs, not humans. I don't guard my toys, and love when you throw them for me. I'm patiently waiting for my chance to be your faithful companion and protector. If you're looking for a medium energy guy who craves love, enjoys the company of humans, and appreciates the simple pleasures in life, then look no further. I will be a loyal, playful, and endlessly entertaining addition to a loving home.
