Derik is a 3-4 yr old male coonhound that was found on 8-2-2024 in Highlands NC. He was extremely malnourished and his front left leg had been previously amputated. He is eating well now, has no health concerns, and had his first round of vaccinations( I took him to the vet on 8-5-24). Derik is extremely sweet, loving to both us and our son, and has been very well behaved. He is a quick learner to commands and has some tendencies to want to look up at trees and occasionally give out a bark. He can be easily redirected from this though if you ask him not to. In our family, we already have 3 rescued dogs(both large and small) and a cat. It is obvious that he is going to chase our cat and we cannot keep him due to this. We have a large yard with a 5' foot fence and he does not seem to be able to get out of it, probably due to him missing a leg. This is a great dog, that needs a loving home, with an area that he can run but not runaway from. We are working on him gaining some needed weight so he is still extremely happy about being fed. They have been no signs of food aggression but we also have been feeding him small amounts, often, and away from others. Due to our cat being inside now, we have kept him in our yard and porch area. He goes way out in the yard when he needs to go potty but we do not know how he would be inside. If it were not for our cat, he would be an inside/outside dog at our home.
