About Azula

Adoption Fee: $150
Belgian Malinois / German Shepherd
Age: Puppy
Sex: Female

Azula is a sweet, energetic, incredibly smart puppy with so much potential. Her favorite things in the world are bully sticks, playing tug with her humans, and butt scritches. She was adopted from Hayward Animal Shelter at about 3 months old and has been trained by her first-time dog owner ever since. Her breed is assumed by her temperament and look, though she is large for both a Malinois and GSD at about 80lbs. She knows a plethora of commands and tricks, is food and toy motivated, and is eager to learn more. She needs a little exercise and a lot of mental stimulation to be happiest and most well-behaved. She struggles with being alone, but her owner lives in an apartment and hasn't really worked on it. She believes that with the right home and patience, Azula would do well with crate training as she already sleeps in her crate at night with the door open. Azula does well on long car rides, adapts fairly quickly to big changes like moves, and loves her family. She is working through some reactivity to dogs, prey animals, and strangers who approach her. She needs patience and to be advocated for around strangers as she does not like hers or her handler's space to be invaded. With proper introductions to people, she warms up and becomes best friends quickly. She loves to play with other dogs but gets far too excited on leash and struggles with boundaries. Her owner has requested that she remain out of dog parks with strange dogs and only has a select number of dog friends who are properly introduced. She has lived with cats and does well around cats that are confident and have clear, strong boundaries. She has also lived with dogs and would do best with other medium to large dogs with strong boundaries and patience. She plays rough so little dogs might get hurt. She gets over-excited around small children and is generally very mouthy so she would do best with a family or single person with older or no children. She needs a very structured environment with a handler(s) who, ideally, has experience with the breed and the time, confidence, passion, and resources to train her up to her full potential. Things she needs improvement on: resource gaurding with high value objects (bones and objects she finds outside), recall, 'leave it', 'drop it', leash ettiquette (pulls a bit and becomes over aroused easily), confidence, containing excitement, rushing the front door and barking when strangers approach
