About Clyde

Adoption Fee: $100
German Shorthaired Pointer / Black and Tan Coonhound
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Clyde is a 2 year old male, neutered GSP/Coonhound mix, 70 lbs that is being rehomed due to resource guarding that has become unsafe for our other smaller dogs. He is a wonderful dog, very sweet, athletic, smart, and loving. He is pretty good with obedience & tracking, excellent at fetch, and can tree raccoons and other small game without having been trained to do so. Would make a great dog for someone who hunts and enjoys the outdoors. He is not good around cats or children. He does love to play with other dogs but also can be very dominant and aggressive towards them. Would probably do best in a home with no other dogs. A home with an adult male may be the most ideal for Clyde. He was initially rescued by another family when his pregnant mother was brought in as a stray. In his first home he was underfed which created resource guarding issues surrounding food which have been manageable by feeding him in his crate. He was surrendered from his first home because his owner was yelling at him to sit and tried to push him down into a sit and Clyde bit him. He was then sent to a prison training program where he lived with a male inmate for a month while being socialized and trained. We adopted him after this. He did great with us for the first year, got along with the other dogs and enjoyed playing with them but since turning 2 his dominant personality has begun to come out and he is resource guarding his sleeping space, crate, food, and toy balls from the other dogs and now even from me (the female in the home). There was an incident where i tried to approach him while he was laying on the couch (which he used to enjoy). He growled at me and as I attempted to back away he lunged at me scratching & nipping at me (which just barely broke my skin). Since then we have cut all his access to furniture and we have not had an incident since. We want to be very open about Clyde's resource guarding issues as we are committed to finding a home for him that is willing to work with him through these issues. His new home should either have experience with dog aggression or be willing to employ a behaviorist. We have been to the vet to discuss this recent change in behavior and we have not been able to identify anything physical that may be causing this. We know the right home is out there for him but having 2 other dogs in our house I think is making him feel overwhelmed and become more territorial. Please email me any questions, we are happy to share more information (or pictures!). Aside from his resource guarding issues he truly is a super fun & loving dog, down for any adventure. We take him biking, hiking, swimming, camping, etc, and he loves it!
