More info and photos can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/19DcBoV5GcT2FL4ksBCyoT6xubAfpJDj4NOX8p3S4O-4/edit?usp=sharing Birdie is a loving, loyal and joyful dog. In the morning she wakes up with a cute little smile on her face, because she's excited to get pets from her people. If we take too long to let her out in the morning, she'll start tippy tapping her paws to show us how excited she is. She loves to chase squirrels, watch birds, chew bones, and take long naps in the sun. She's very friendly with people and handles herself well around children and babies. She is incredibly intelligent and very food motivated and thus can be trained to learn all sorts of commands. She's worked with a pair of trainers since we adopted her, one of which is her dog walker, and he reinforces her training and obedience daily. She's as fast as lightning, very strong, and sheds lightly. Birdie needs a kind and patient owner, who sees her for the loving and intelligent animal she is. Her new owners should have ample space for her to stretch her legs and explore. Ideally her new owner would be able to work from home, or at least not leave her for prolonged periods indoors. Her new owners should be active, or at least able to exercise her thoroughly. (If you're in the Berkeley area, we can pass along the contact info of her current dog walker Juan. He is like her third parent and they have a very special relationship). If you're interested in inviting Birdie into your home, we'd provide all of her things (her beds, many toys, kongs, lick mats, leashes, sweaters, bowls, medications, toothbrush, etc.). Birdie's Past: Birdie was adopted from Woods Animal Shelter in San Luis Obispo. Before that, she was in a rural shelter in the Fresno area, where she had a litter of puppies. Woods Animal Shelter spayed her, and treated her for 'happy tail,' a condition where dogs cannot stop themselves from banging their long tails against their surroundings, resulting in severe tissue damage. We adopted Bird at around 65 lbs, with an infected tail. We took her to Montclair Vet Hospital in Oakland, CA for treatment. She is now in excellent health; she's up to date on all shots and flea meds, weighs a healthy 75lbs, and has a very cute and shortened tail that no longer causes her pain. We don't have many details about Bird's life in Fresno, but for two reasons we believe it was not pleasant for her. One reason is the scars on her nose and paws, which were more prominent when we adopted her, but now are not very noticeable. The second reason is her general fear of other dogs, regardless of their size. Birdie has had a few positive interactions with dogs in our time together, but generally she is alert and anxious when other dogs are around. She cannot live with any other animals in the house. We really hope that her future can be one with many dog friends, but due to our financial and time constraints, we were not able to socialize her with other dogs. We believe that the location of our apartment is exacerbating this issue, we live in a 600 sf ground floor apartment on a busy street corner in Berkeley. Many people in our neighborhood stop in front of our house to let their dogs sniff. Birdie was stressed by dogs being outside of the house all of the time, and so after consulting with our Vet, we started giving her anxiety medication (600mg of Gabapentin a day). We saw an improvement in her anxiety levels after starting the Gabapentin, and thankfully her personality and general happy temperament did not change. We are charging a $150 rehoming fee.
