About Cooper

Adoption Fee: $200
Rat Terrier
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

I'm Cooper, a loving, loyal 2-year-old male rat terrier, who weighs 13 1/2 lbs. From puppyhood on, I lived with my elderly owner and didn't get out much to see and meet the outside world. As a result, I become very attached to my chosen person(s) and quite protective of them. Anybody else is a stranger, and anything strange can be scary. When my owner died, I went to a shelter that was VERY scary; it was filled with noise, dogs, and people. I growled and lunged at the people out of fear. The shelter said I needed a muzzle for things like vet visits, but my foster mom understood my fear and was patient with me. Pretty soon, she stopped being a stranger, and I let her brush my teeth, trim my nails, and take me to the vet--all without a muzzle! I didn't love those things, but I did a good job tolerating them! In my foster home, I love eating my meals, chewing on rubber bones, and playing with the other dogs, my foster mom, and squeaky toys. I'm trustworthy indoors; I don't destroy things that aren't mine or go potty inside. Naturally I warm up faster to women than men, but my foster dad is patient with me, and now I've started to lie down with him in the humans' bed. My new home will need at least one other dog my size (no big, scary dogs please) and a person who, like my foster mom, will help me take little steps to experience more of the things I missed as a pup. A calm home with predictable routines and no children (they're scary AND unpredictable) will help bring out my best. I do have some allergies which make me lick and scratch. Chicken seems to be one of those allergies, so I eat a limited ingredient dog food (around $40/month). I'm such a handsome little guy, I'm sure you'll think I'm worth it. I'm also super loyal and with your help, I'll make an awesome sidekick!
