About Elphaba 'Elphie'

Meet Elphaba. Our family is in the heartbreaking position of having to rehome her. Elphaba is a 30lb, 5 year old, sweet, outgoing, fun-loving cattle dog mix. She knows basic obedience and is house-trained. She loves belly rubs, sunbathing (one of her cool features is that she's white in winter, and black-spotted in summer), walks, fetch, and snuggling under the covers. We are very sad to have to rehome her, and hope to find her circumstances that will be better matched to her personality. Elphaba has always played well with new dogs, and with housemates more dominant than her (she is quite submissive for a female cattle dog mix). Since a dog submissive to her joined our family, Elphaba has slowly turned against that housemate when a resource such as a visitor, food, a toy, etc., is involved. She has lived and played with other dogs; she has NOT ever been dominant aggressive, or generally dog aggressive, and she does NOT resource guard with people. However, we do not know how she will be with a canine housemate now that she has become a resource guarder with this one. She would be best suited to a household without other dogs, or with a person proficient in dog training and able to take the time to work with her on this one issue. Our wish for Elphaba is that she would end up in a household with an active owner or owners who would take her out frequently, hiking and such. As a cattle dog, she requires more activity than we have been able to provide, and this alone may be enough to curtail her resource guarding. There is no adoption fee, but interested parties will be carefully vetted to insure a good fit. Please consider adopting this deserving, loving dog into your family. Note: After consult with a behavioral specialist to confirm the need for rehoming, her assessment is that Elphie may still be okay with other dogs. Just not her current housemate.
