Eli is a 4 year old, 14.9 pound Chihuahua mix LOCATION: Pensacola FL NEEDS: Quiet home, fenced yard, no other dogs or kids. HIGHLIGHTS: Sweetheart miracle dog! Sweet Eli was found lying perfectly still in someone's backyard. The finder posted to see if he had an owner and made sure he had food and water, but was afraid to move him without knowing what was wrong with him. When no one claimed him and he still hadn't moved, we were asked to help. We could not leave him lying there alone and scared, so Eli came in to rescue! He was in really sad shape. We could tell that he was injured, but we didn't know the extent of it, and he was also malnourished and covered in fleas. We took him to our vet as soon as we could for an exam and X-rays and found out that Eli is a little miracle dog! This poor boy has had his pelvis broken in six places, and 50% of pelvic breaks in people and dogs are fatal. The vet said his injury could only have been caused by a car, or motorcycle, or a kick by a cow or a horse...and he estimates that it happened over a month ago! We also found that any surgery would be very risky, so the decision was made not to take a chance of hurting him further. Eli has already started to heal, is not in any pain and gets around well, considering his injury. He is still gaining strength and becoming more stable but he does have a limp and can be a little unsteady on his feet. For all this pup has been through, he is a very affectionate little guy! Eli loves to snuggle and be held and his favorite spot is anywhere next to you. He's so sweet! It is not a good idea for him to risk being hurt again so he should not be in a home with other dogs (although he gets along with them just fine) or kids. We have no idea how he would be with cats. His best home is with a calm family and one that works from home or is retired. That would make him very happy! Eli likes to casually explore the yard and should have a home with a fenced yard to keep him safe. He goes in and out the doggy door to go potty and at night he will get up and use a pee pad. His foster mom worries about him falling off the big bed so at night Eli sleeps in a dog bed beside the big bed. He has been to the vet for a wellness exam, is up to date on shots, neutered, has been fecal tested, is heartworm negative, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. When he had his neuter we also make sure he had a dental and he had one tooth that needed to be removed. Eli is a super sweet dog who had something pretty terrible happen to him. It seems likely that he was not well cared for but we will make sure he is now! He deserves a home with a family to love him and take good care of him for the rest of his life! Puppies, dogs with pending vet appointments, and dogs with behavioral issues are only adoptable within a 1 hour drive to Pensacola. Most others we will consider within a 5-hour drive. We do not ship or transport our dogs. *We are a foster-based rescue and do not have a facility. Our dogs live in private homes in and around the Pensacola area until they are adopted.
