Would someone please, please give Edna a chance? Please read through her updated bio and see if she tugs at your heart like she does ours! We are looking for her forever home or a foster home with someone who doesn't have any other dogs and we will consider a foster to adopt situation! EDNA is a 5 year old, 19 pound beautiful female Italian Greyhound-Chihuahua mix LOCATION: Pensacola FL NEEDS: A relaxed loving furever home, no kids, no other dogs, experienced dog owner. HIGHLIGHTS: Loyal companion, house friendly, affectionate and sweet! Edna was traumatized by her prior experience and can be afraid of some dogs and people and new environments. But she's trainable, eager to please, and sweet as can be once she knows you. Her foster mom has been working with Edna on obedience training and regularly takes Edna around new people and different surroundings to help socialize her. She is doing so well and has learned that her person is the pack leader. That helps alleviate her anxiety and gives her confidence knowing that she is protected by her pack leader. This is so important for Edna! She was always afraid and anxious before and worried about protecting her person. Imagine being always on high alert that something bad was going to happen and the one person you loved the most wasn't going to take care of you. That was Edna in her prior life and it's taken us some time to undo the damage so her beautiful personality can truly shine. She is also on anti-anxiety medication and between that and her continued socialization we have seen a big difference! Edna was surrendered to us along with her fur brother after the two dogs were found abandoned in a hotel in Texas. Shortly after they came to us we were contacted by someone who filled us in on some of their history. While the early years with their owner were good, there had been at least a couple of years of neglect, isolation, uncertainty and unkind treatment. This caused Edna to be insecure and fearful and she became unfriendly to other dogs and some people. (There are people she takes to right away, but others not so much, and she tends to like women more than men as she was mistreated by a male.) Edna is sweet, sweet but needs the right home. The most important thing is that she needs someone who will take the role as her pack leader, who will not be afraid of her when she gets scared and who can reassure her. This is not as difficult as it may sound and just takes regularly using the proper commands, lots of positive reinforcement, practicing commands with treats a couple times a day, plus walking, taking rides, and visiting dog friendly places, like Lowes or the park, so that she continues to be confident in the world. Her owner should observe her in certain situations so she can be removed from a stressful environment and given the commands and reassurance she needs to feel safe when she's afraid. Most importantly Edna should always be rewarded with warmth and positivity to help her continue on her trust journey. She is going to be best in a home with a calm atmosphere, a female owner, and as an only dog, but once bonded, which doesn't take too long in the right environment, Edna is the most loving, precious, caring soul. She will follow you through the house and loves to go on errands, walks, or rides in the car. She likes to cuddle up on the couch or lay close just gazing at you. She is playful, especially in the mornings and after dinner, liking to explore the yard and break out into zoomies. Edna does very well in the house, is potty trained, and good left alone. She will happily greet you when you return, and is delighted to greet guests she knows and trusts. Her devotion and love for her person is reflected in her beautiful brown eyes, through her cuddles and kisses, and by the way she hugs someone she loves, then tucks her head under their chin. Edna plays with toys and she's a bit of a hoarder! She has no problem with the cat in her foster home, only because the cat is a recluse rarely coming out of hiding. To be safe she should not go to a home where children live or where they are regularly in the home. At night Edna likes to sleep in the big bed with her person and enjoys snuggling under the covers, but she will also sleep on a dog bed if her person prefers. Edna's best life is going to be in a less stressful environment, although she loves her foster mom. Edna has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, spayed, fecal and heartworm negative, has had a 12 month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.
