Name: Koda Age: approx. 4 years old Breed: Schnauzer/Terrier mix, 17 pounds Sex: Female (spayed) Location: New York County, NY For a sweet video of Koda, please visit: https://youtu.be/K_6ypcMTzJE Due to a recent move to the city, Koda's owner would like to find her a home where she can thrive under blue skies and play and explore in the green grass! Her owner says, ' I want to prioritize her well-being and happiness above all else, and she deserves a home where she can thrive, surrounded by love, attention, and the opportunity to frolic outdoors and go on long walks. Koda is incredibly special. That may be biased but everyone who meets her loves her and is so impressed by how resilient and lovely she is. It is breaking my heart that I have to look for a better home for her. She may be fully blind, but that does not stop her from being a happy, curious and confident pup. She is a loyal, sweet, and adorable companion.' Vet Info: Koda was originally rescued from a puppy mill in Texas. She was found on the streets after she was most likely dumped. When her owner adopted her, she was told that Koda's blindness was most likely caused by physical trauma. She has retinal detachment in both eyes and is completely blind. In addition, she has skin issues on her back that benefit from medical shampoo and may also benefit from other treatment and additional vet visits. Her owner believes this to be canine ichthyosis, but it is undiagnosed. When rescued, Koda was heartworm positive, but she has been treated and has tested heartworm negative. She has just been to the vet and is up to date on Rabies and DA2PP. She at one time was Lyme positive but asymptomatic. Koda just tested negative for Lyme disease as well as Heartworm. Her entire 4DX snap test was negative. Her Heartguard and Nexguard prescriptions were refilled. Koda is spayed and microchipped. Dog Info: Koda is an indoor dog with the run of the house. She's housebroken and leash trained. Her owner has taught Koda cues for Sit, Paw, Stay, Come, Bag (to get her in her carrier, and Step Up/Step Down (for stairs). Koda LOVES to play. She loves to be chased around, and she'll try to catch you. She's very upbeat and spunky but also sleeps and likes to relax most of the day! This outgoing girl is generally good with men, women, and teenagers as well as some other dogs. She has not been around children and would probably do best in a home without them. Her owner tells us, 'Since she is fully blind she does not get along with energetic dogs especially at first. She has snapped at a puppy who jumped on her face wanting to play. She also snapped (and made contact) out of fear at someone (an adult) who jumped right next to her (and landed on her paw) but immediately felt bad and became submissive. She has gotten along with a lot of dogs that there have been no issues with, but she has also not gotten along with some. I think she could do great in a house with another dog as long as she acclimates to them and they are not physically playful (at first at least) but she is also happy to be an only child.' As described above, Koda's biting/snapping did not draw blood. These instances would be described as Level 2 on the Dunbar Bite Scale: https://apdt.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/ian-dunbar-dog-bite-scale.pdf Koda is not possessive with treats, toys, or food. She very quickly maps out new areas with her nose and is able to acclimate quickly, running up and down stairs. She becomes confident fairly quickly and adapts to new situations and surroundings.
