About Leah Leah Leah

Adoption Fee: $200
Shih Tzu / Yorkie
Age: Senior
Sex: Female

Her name is really just Leah but she gets super excited if you say it three times in a row real fast. And after what she's been through, we're overjoyed to see how happy and playful she's becoming. After 4 weeks with her, I was able to pick her up and kiss her all over and even rub her little belly for a minute. She greets me at the door happily, is eager for me to put a leash on her to take her out, and will jump up on me and ask me to pick her up. She even asks for more petting when I stop. But the key to all this is that I took the time to learn what triggers what I call, her PTSD. Leah has been horribly abused and neglected. She's head shy and doesn't like strangers to touch her but once she knows you, she prefers to have her ears rubbed. We have to pick her up from her chest & rump because her sides seem to be a trigger. I'm guessing that's got something to do with why she reacts so defensively if you try to block her from going out the door with your foot and why she hates the broom. She was a holy terror to the cat for the first few days but within a week they were sharing a bed, coexisting peacefully and Leah was scaling the baby-gate to get to her purring friend. She's absolutely terrified of other dogs and her first instinct is to attack them. Quite honestly, she behaves like a little demon b--ch when first meeting another animal. She's convinced they're all going to eat her. She lived in the woods alone for a very long time and she knows how these things go. To overcome this, we spent increasing amounts of time keeping her on the leash, while correcting her bad behavior, and made sure the other dog was non-threatening. It took about two weeks. Leah will now lay on the floor side by side with Raven, an 80# pitbull, all day long. With a non-reactive larger dog and a dog-savvy owner, Leah can be made to coexist peacefully with anyone - she just really needs to know she's safe and that you've got everything under control. Her compatibility is going to depend on her new mom or dad. Leah is totally healthy and fully vetted. She's also housebroken and does well on a leash (except for wanting to protect you from other animals she may encounter on the walk). She doesn't tear things up or make messes but she is a little old lady and does need someone to take her out to potty frequently. She does require the use of a seat belt & harness or a carrier for car rides. She's a very quiet girl unless she hears strangers. She'll make it known that she plans to protect her home from intruders. Leah needs a quiet, all-adult home with a parent who is willing to play 50 first dates for a week or two. The person who does that for Leah will be well rewarded. When she loves you she's a lovable, cute, little, bouncy, happy, playful fur ball.
