SOPHIE is a 10 year old, 20 pound mixed breed pup LOCATION: Pensacola FL NEEDS: A quiet loving home. HIGHLIGHTS: Gentle girl looking for love, housebroken. We hope people see Sophie with their hearts. We hope they look beyond her patchy coat and her age-worn face. We hope they see the warmth of her brown eyes, and give her a chance so they can know the beauty of her grateful heart. Sophie came to us from another rescue. We don't know why she was there, we don't know any of her backstory. We know that she was scared, and scared dogs sometimes act defensively, and that's what we were told happened. Unfortunately the people taking care of her were afraid of her and she was neglected. But someone saw her huddled alone and afraid in a corner of a kennel, and he saw her with his whole heart. That person brought her out of that place and worked with her for a few weeks and then asked if we could take her the rest of the way home. When Sophie came to us, she was very shut down and in pretty terrible condition, (yes, believe it or not worse than now). We put her in a quiet, calm foster home where she could decompress and we started working on healing her heart and her body. Sophie slowly gained trust and she is looking so much better. We feel that she's ready to find a special home with someone who will appreciate the love of a quiet older dog. Sophie is very mellow. She asks for very little from her foster family, but her foster mom says you can tell that she is grateful for the things that she does get, like good food, a soft bed, a kind word, a gentle pat on the head. She mostly spends her days napping in her bed and she closes her eyes blissfully when she gets belly rubs. Sophie is happy to see her foster family when they come home from church or an errand, especially her foster mom. She greets them calmly with a wagging tail and love in her eyes. Sophie would be happiest as an only dog or in a home with a calm dog with a similar personality. She needs a laid-back home with not too much activity. We have not had her around cats and she would not appreciate kids. Sophie is housebroken and loves to be out on the deck, but isn't a big fan of being out in the grass. She prefers to do her business and come back inside. Whoever adopts her needs to be very careful that she doesn't get too much sun or she could get sunburnt. She should not stay outside long. Sophie will walk on a leash but you have to work with her on it. She responds well to gentle encouragement, and those belly rubs! However we think a fenced yard would be best for her. She is a sweet girl and we think she would be a wonderful companion to an older person or couple who can appreciate her company. Sophie has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, spayed, fecal tested, heartworm negative, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. She's ready for someone to love her the way that she should have been loved her entire life.
