CHICO is a sweet 7-year-old 10 lb male Chihuahua. LOCATION: Pensacola FL NEEDS: Calm quiet home with a fenced yard. HIGHLIGHTS: Sweet and loving boy, housebroken! Chico came to us from a suddenly bad situation. His family left him unexpectedly due to circumstances out of their control. He spent a day and a night in a car driving around with another family member while she frantically tried to figure out what to do with him. She reached out to us and we were really glad we said yes to him. This poor dog was absolutely petrified. He was shaking so hard we had to give him some meds just to calm him down. We moved him to a quiet foster home as soon as we could so he could start to feel safe and his healing could begin. Now that he not so scared and is starting to relax, Chico is a very sweet and quiet boy. He is laid back and loves his person and likes lying on a lap. Right now he does not like to be left alone, likely in part due to the upheaval he experienced. Chico will cry a bit if you leave or have to work outside. His foster gates him away from the door so he won't scratch at it and he does well with that. Chico sleeps in his person's bed, but we think he will be okay sleeping in a doggy bed in the bedroom if preferred. Although allowing him to sleep in the big bed will help him adjust to a new home again and feel closer to you, especially in the early days. Chico gets along with his foster's small dogs, but is not really interested in playing. We believe he was an only dog so he is probably not familiar with that concept! He would be okay as an only dog or with another small furry friend. He was in a home with kids although we are not sure of the ages. We believe he would be fine with calm older kids. We do not know how he would be with cats but don't anticipate an issue. Chico is housebroken and walks very well with a harness and leash. However we are recommending a fence. Sadly Chico is still looking for his owner. He tries to dart out of the kitchen door that goes out into his foster family's garage and definitely needs to be watched carefully around open doors or gates. We think that will get better over time. Chico has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, has been fecal tested, is heartworm negative, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. He does need a dental cleaning and a couple of bad teeth removed and that will be scheduled at one of our vets soon and is covered by the rescue.
