About Duchess

Adoption Fee: $400
Alaskan Malamute
Age: Senior
Sex: Female

Our gorgeous Alaskan Malamute, Duchess, is due for some good luck. She came to us from NYCACC last year after her Staten Island family surrendered her at the age of 11, citing complications from an out of state move.%A0 Duchess went into culture shock at her abrupt reversal of fortune. She had lived with this family since she was puppy, and now her world was upside down. We were thrilled to have her join our rescue. She seemed to be depressed when we first met her, not quite sure what her future holds. It has been gratifying to see Duchess warm to Connecticut hospitality, and watch her thrive with gentle human touch. Duchess is ready to start her new life as a glorious Senior Citizen. She is a gem: friendly to everyone and, was a dream patient during her recent vet visits. She tolerated all the poking and prodding like a champ. Duchess turns heads, and win hearts everywhere she goes. Alaskan Malamutes can be great family dogs in experienced hands, and Duchess has done well with older kids.%A0She is true to breed temperament standard: calm, medium energy, loyal and extremely loving. She relishes human touch, and would be a great choice for a big family, with older kids.%A0 She could also join an active adult home, with folks who love a gentle large breed companion. She would be a good choice for on-the-go seniors, or laid-back folks who who love to relax by the fire with a good book. She rides well in the car and would make a great traveling buddy, but she also loves to be home with her cherished people. Duchess has proven herself to be a true Boss.%A0She has mothering instincts, and loves to control the 'social order.'%A0She is not above taking disciplinary action with bold dogs who act like fools in her presence.%A0Duchess will always be a genuine magnanimous Alpha Queen. She could coexist with the right dog, but will object to rude dogs who like to play rough.%A0 At 80 pounds, Duchess is small for her breed, but could easily lose 10 pounds to be at ideal weight. Adopters should maintain a healthy weight and light exercise regimen to ward off obesity related joint pain that plagues the giant breeds in their senior years. She is a large, calm dog, who needs moderate exercise, perhaps one to two leisurely daily leash walks, in addition to frequent potty breaks. Duchess has good house manners. She is mostly house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect the occasional accident as she transitions to a new home. She is in excellent health, and has been spayed. She has received all routine vaccinations and health screenings.%A0 If you are interested in Duchess, please write to [email protected], or call/text Denise at cell: 860-908-9738 for an adoption application.
