About Benton

Meet BENTON! STATS: 7 year old Merle Pom LOCATION: Pensacola FL NEEDS: Squeaky toys, a small dog friend, fenced yard. HIGHLIGHTS: Super sweet and cuddly boy with a big personality. Benton is a gorgeous 7 year old, 8 pound Merle Pom who was owner surrendered to us. He may take a minute to adjust to a new home and will need an owner with some patience, but once he settles Benton is definitely a lap dog! He will let you know when he's done playing and ready to get in your lap by scratching at your leg or on the edge of the couch for you to pick him up. Once he gets comfortable with you he will become very affectionate and cuddly--and even kissy! When you pick him up he often will give you a couple of little kisses, and then settle in for snuggles. During his snuggly time Benton is very quiet and calm and that is his demeanor about 75% of the time. He does however LOVE squeaky toys and he is so cute when he plays with them. He gets very excited and likes to throw his favorite squeaky ball in the air and catch it all by himself. Benton is also very excited to see his people when they come home and he jumps and dances in front of them. He will most likely start out very timid, and even skittish and grumpy, until he gets comfortable with his new surroundings and people. Something in his previous home made him reactive so he should not go to a home with small children, but older kids/teens would probably be ok if they understand his cues to give him space when he wants it. He does have the beginnings of a cataract in one eye, and can startle if you approach him on that side. Benton's foster family says he shows a LOT of interest in their kittens, but he can't get to them to see how he would interact. Even though he plays fine by himself and isn't much for wrestling or playing with other dogs, Benton needs another small dog in his new home to be his buddy. He loves snuggling up to a senior chi in his foster home. Benton barks when his people come home and howls a little when they leave but calms down and will take a nap or snuggle up to another dog. He is working on his housebreaking and does well, but would benefit from someone who can spend more time keeping him on a tight schedule. He is working on his leash training and needs a fenced yard to explore. At night he sleeps in his favorite dog bed next to the big bed. Benton just needs a home with someone who is patient and understands that it may take him a little while to feel secure. He seems kind of like an old man at first, but boy when his big personality starts to come out, he is so much fun! Benton has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, fecal and heartworm tested, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. He is heartworm positive and has already been treated. He will be tested again soon and we are hopeful that he will be heartworm free! If he is not he will be re-treated at our expense until he is negative.
