Meet Mr. Barksdale A 14 year old 23 pound neutered miniature schnauzer with a heart of gold. He was a rescue during Covid 2020 quarantine from the South LA shelter. He was instantly attached to me and loves following me around the house and laying in my lap. When I rescued Mr. Barksdale my boyfriend was away for about three-four months due to being a fire fighter, and when he came home the dog never adjusted to him being in the house and is constantly attacking him. I sadly have to let him go to another loving house, as this is not a fair situation for him or my partner. The only time the dog and him get along, cuddle, walk and exist together, is when I'm not home. It's the strangest thing. We have tried some things to curb the behavior but he seems to be very territorial about me. When I've had visitors at the house he will bark and attack them with the little teeth he has left. He is my own true guard dog. When I have gone out of town and left him at my parents or friends house he is well behaved and sweet. It's only when I'm around that he becomes territorial or attacks. I have taken him to small dog parks but he has no interest in exploring and mainly stayed by my side. He isn't interested in sniffing or playing with other dogs either. I don't know how he is with cats or children. One thing important thing to note is he can't do stairs. He will tumble down and he is hesitant to go up them. I carry him up and down any on our adventures. He also can't swim so don't leave him unattended by a pool. He can't jump on couches or beds. He watches tv on the couch with me but you have to be careful he doesn't jump off. He gets four 10-15 minute walks a day. He is good on the leach and doesn't pull. On walks he sometimes lunges and barks at people and other times he will just ignore them and keeps busy exploring. He will tell you when he has had enough and wants to go back cause he will stop and stare at you. Dinnertime is between 4-6pm. Sometimes I'll leave kibble out for him in the morning but he usually sleeps all day. His bowl is a mix of 2/3 things: 'Hill's Science Diet small paws (adult 7+) kibble 'Royal canin adult Mini Schnauzer kibble 'Hill's prescription diet digestive care i/d low fat pt version (NOT stew) Sometimes just one kibble and pt. Or just kibbles. I like to mix it up so he doesn't get bored. He is a very excited boy when it comes to dinner. He likes to run back and forth from his bowl to me. Most days Mr. Barksdale can be found lounging in one of his many beds with toys he could care less about. He enjoys his walks and has the most adorable galloping bunny hop. He wants nothing more than to be in my arms and hopefully yours. He is house trained and has never spent a moment in a crate. I have purchased every treat from Petco and Petsmart and he is not interested at all. He isn't on any medications but he does take Simparica Trio monthly for fleas and ticks. He is up to date on all shots. Once in a while I will give him some roasted white chicken breast from Trader Joe's or a slice of green apple. Hope he can be a wonderful addition to any home with lots of love to give. Another note, he is not a barker, I just loved the name. As for health issues he has a minor heart murmur but did not require medication for it. I have all of his paperwork for that work up. I have spent a fortune on his maintenance including teeth and the vet said they could see him living another 4-5 years. He is truly young at heart. When people see him running and playing they cant believe he is 14. His only issues really are aggression and attacking (with 14 teeth left) when others are around me. When I'm not around he is a delight and cute with everyone! I currently work five minutes from my house and I'm able to go home on my hour lunch breaks and walk him and hang out. So he's never really alone. He is house trained but he can't be left longer than six hours or he'll pee, I think he has a very weak bladder considering his age. I have nationwide pet insurance through my job and it is transferable after I sign him over. I pay $950 a year and it will be $1000 for you unless your job also has nationwide pet insurance. The insurance is probably a must to keep him on because I imagine he'll have other little ailments along the way and they pretty much cover 80 to 90% of everything that I pay out-of-pocket it's a very good deal. His current vets: Parkview Pet Clinic and Vet Villa. They know him well and have all his records. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to meet him at a park.Thank you!
