PLEASE READ INFORMATION AT THE END OF THE POST FOR ADOPTIONS Comet is a 5 year old, 13 pound tan and cream Shih Tzu with the cutest underbite who was found as a stray. When the finder was unable to locate an owner she surrendered him to us. This little guy has not had an easy life. He has a few bald spots on him that we don't think will ever grow hair. We don't know what happened to him, but it looks like he may have been burned. We think he was mistreated and he has a defensive mechanism firmly in place. It will definitely take the right person to make a difference in his life. We believe he would do better with just a woman in the home. By his reactions they are fairly certain that his abuse was at the hands of a man. Comet does not like to be told 'no'. He will let you know his displeasure by growling and coming toward you aggressively, and he has nipped. But once he calms down he is back to normal. By his behavior we think he was hit with something while being reprimanded, and his reaction is from fear. Comet definitely needs an alpha person who has experience working with dogs with behavioral issues who can understand he has been treated badly and needs to learn to trust. With all that said, 95% of the time he is as sweet as can be! He will follow you around and watch everything you do. He likes to be petted. You can pick him up and hold him and love on him, as long as he's not scared. Comet is not a big cuddler though and doesn't sleep on the bed. His foster mom finds him often lying underneath the dog ramp to the big bed or on the hard floor when there are soft places readily available for him to sleep on. If she gets up and puts a bed near him and puts him in it he will sleep there all night. It's like he needs permission to have comfort in his life. Comet is a barker, and does not know how to play. When the dogs are getting a little crazy playing around him he will bark at them because he doesn't understand what they are doing. He wags his tail happily for mealtimes and is not food aggressive. Comet likes other dogs and will do better in a calm home with more laidback dogs. He would be okay as an only too. He was fine with the finder's cat, and he should NOT go to a home with kids. Comet does well going outside to potty but he will mark inside and needs some work with that. He definitely needs a home with a fenced yard. He has been to the vet for a wellness check (yes, he had to be muzzled), is up to date on shots, neutered, fecal tested, heartworm negative, has had a 12 month heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.
