About Horse

Adoption Fee: $400
Great Dane / Irish Wolfhound
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

LOCATION: McKinney, Texas - AGE/DOB: 2 years, 12/2019 (estimate) - Horse is a large Great Dane/Irish Wolfhound Mix weighing over 100 pounds. He has a medium energy level and, while he does get the occasional case of the zoomies in the yard, he is very content to snooze all day beside his foster mom while she is working. Temperament-wise, Horse is quite calm and a go with the flow type of guy (he is not dominant). He does very well with his foster family's two medium-large female dogs. He will sniff them but doesn't bother them if they are not interested and will happily play with the younger Lab mix. His previous foster had a larger male dog and Horse was intimidated by this dog. We do not know how he does with other male dogs. Horse does great with the teenagers in his foster home. He loves to run in the yard with them and learned to jump up onto the trampoline to play there too. He might be a little clumsy with very small children but would be fine with school age and up. There are no cats in his foster family, so we can't say for sure how he would behave with cats. Although, he did try to chase the bunnies in the yard, so his future family should be cautious if they have small animals. Horse is affectionate and will follow his humans around but is not a total Velcro dog like many Danes. He will put his paw on you to tell you he would like a belly rub - be careful, because his big meaty paw can sometimes be more of a punch than a pat! He will sit close by, but generally not right on you as this makes him a bit hot with all his fur. His foster family allows him on the sofa and bed, and he will curl up on the armchair beside them while they watch TV. At night, he will often lay on the bed between his foster parents, but if he gets too hot, he will move to the colder floor. Horse does not resource guard with other dogs but has lightly growled when his foster mom attempted to put kibble he dropped back into his bowl while he was eating, so just something to keep in mind. Not unlike many Danes, he does tend to scatter kibble around as he eats. Also, Horse's head is over table height, and he may snag a crumb that is left after a meal, but his foster family has had no issue with him counter surfing. Horse will go into his crate when his foster family is out of the home and seems to do well in it. He otherwise will not choose to go into his crate on his own. He is house trained and will go outside to go potty. He will come and stand beside you to indicate to you he wants to go outside. Horse can be very vocal if someone rings the doorbell or, if he hears a noise, he will bark. He patrols the backyard and barks if he hears people on the other side of the fence. He will bark at fire engines or other sirens too. For his first few days in his foster home, he would bark at noises from the kids upstairs, but quickly settled down as he grew more familiar with the environment. He loves toys and will pull multiple toys out of the basket to play with at a time - bones, soft toys, ropes, etc. He found an empty plastic flowerpot in the garden and has had the most fun playing with that too. Horse does know some basic commands, although he doesn't always choose to obey them. It can be hard to get him to come in from the yard sometimes, as he is enjoying himself too much and will ignore you calling him. If you can get up close to him, you only need to put one finger on his collar, and he will willingly allow you to lead him inside. He is a little picky about treats and just drops any milkbone you give him. He seems happy to take most other treats though, especially cheese or peanut butter. It should be noted that, while Horse is not an escape artist, he is an opportunist for sure and if the door is left open, he will bolt outside. Overall, this big guy will be an easy addition to just about any family and if you are looking for an affectionate, go with the flow type of pup, Horse will be perfect for you! ========================= To apply to adopt me, please fill out the application form! https://form.jotform.com/51994996709176 =========================
