About Herschel

My name is Mike Byrge, I found Herschel left in a building that I was cleaning out in Dayton ohio. I removed him from these horrible conditions to try and give him a better life. He is a very sweet boy, about 6 years old. I have tried all rescues Ina ND around Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus etc, and everyone that has responded is unable to help. We have three dogs already, and unable to keep him, biggest reason is our lease will not allow us to have anymore animals and breed specific, where the new owners list our German shepherd as a breed they will not allow in rentals. He is dog aggressive, he was never taken out and socialized with anyone, but he has done great with all humans. I have been working hard over the last week to reach out and contact as many people as I can to help. I did not want to just call or drop him off at a shelter where his time would be very short. I want to help in anyway I can, I took him to groomers last week and got all fleas cleaned off of him and have treated him. He unfortunately got out of a fence last week and bit another dog. Though at the groomer there were 3 dogs and he paid no attention to them at all. So I believe it became a more protection of me or territorial scenario of him being in a fence with me. Prior to that we have had him on a leash to see our shepherd, but he showed no aggression at all. Just pulling on leash and was able to be distracted and pulled away. He is such a sweet dog, every day he has been with me in my truck, but I have to be extremely cautious with him. He has been in our garage, but we have to make sure everything is in place to move him in and out, into backyard etc, so he doesn't see the other dogs. I know there's a great dog in him, I have met with two trainers locally and believe there is nothing that cannot be broken. One would not be able to get him in until October 31st, the other says more that the new owner needs to work with him since I am unable to keep him. We need to find something quickly as our living conditions would definitely be impacted if anything is found out, and it has become a stressful environment. He settles down at night after maybe 20 minutes in the garage and sleeps through the night. He let's us know when he needs to go out, and loves being in the truck.
