It's time to chat-up CHATA (#A1955568). She was brought to the East Valley Animal Shelter, Van Nuys, CA, on April 20 and booked in as 'Evidence/PDA (Potentially Dangerous Animal)' for having 'reportedly attacked and killed a small dog while at large and uncontrolled.' I can only presume that a hearing was conducted by LAAS because, recently, CHATA has been made available for adoption, although it's recommended that she be an only pet. Additional staff notes that have been logged regarding interactions with CHATA follow: 'BEHAVIORAL (Thu, Sep 2, 2021 2:23 PM) Chata had an office visit today followed by yard time. In the yard, she sniffed and solicited play from a large dog named Bella in the other yard.(running along fence, play bow). She gets excited about treats and toys (especially toys) and will jump up to try to get them. I was respectful and didn't try to grab one from her just to be safe, but I did not observe resource guarding with toys. Her favorite toys are soft squeakers. When I gave her a couple small pieces of chicken, she sat for them and took them gently. Easy to get in and out of kennel and walks well on leash. When passing barking large dogs, wagged her tail. BEHAVIORAL (Mon, Jul 26, 2021 12:24 PM) Chata had an office visit today. She does very well on leash. She did not seem interested in other dogs. She liked to play with all the toys, and enjoyed chew toys and toys that she could rip apart. She has nice manners about doors and did not rush the door when I came in and out of my office, or when I entered or put her back in her kennel. She likes to be pet. BEHAVIORAL (Sun, Apr 11, 2021 12:15 PM) POSITIVE BEHAVIOR: IN THE PRESENCE OF THE IMPOUNDING OFFICER, THIS DOG WAS RELAXED AND FRIENDLY. TAIL WAGGING WITH OPEN MOUTH BREATHING. THIS DOG SNIFFED THE OFFICERS PANTS AND DID NOT SHOW SIGNS OF AGGRESSION AT THIS TIME. THIS DOG APPEARS TO BE FRIENDLY WITH PEOPLE.' CHATA is 5-years-old, and despite the time she has spent in the shelter, she appears to have acclimated and volunteers and staff adore her. She is easy to handle; she is playful; she is treat-motivated (she has, probably, been given a few too many treats); and she enjoys personal office time. Please note that the shelter allows walk-ins on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. (14409 Vanowen St., Van Nuys, CA). Tuesday-Friday requires a scheduled appointment. The number is (888) 452-7381 to schedule an appointment or to get additional information.
