About Speck

**** Adoption Pending **** This handsome guy is Speck, a one year old Border Collie. He weighs about 35 pounds but needs to gain more weight since he is a bit thin still. He has beautiful brindle markings. He is also deaf, but we find that these dogs are still amazing, active companions. Please research training deaf dogs before applying to adopt. Speck is mostly house trained, but will definitely need reinforcement since he is still such a pup. He is crate trained. He is a smart guy and his family should be ready to do some training. Speck has been good with men and women so far. He isn't a good fit for kids since he may is likely to knock them over ans may be startled if they wake him. Teen kids would be fine. Speck has been good with the dogs he has met. He can be timid at first, but warms right up. He isn't totally sure how to play yet but is starting to get the idea. He is living with a few herder savvy cats who find him irritating. He is super interested in engaging them and doesn't know how to be gentle. Any cat pals would need to be really dog savvy and also have a place to get away from him. Speck shows some interest in fetching. He LOVES the big herding balls (click on the red YouTube button to watch him play). He likes chew toys. He really likes to pick up and bring things like the dog bowl, bottle of soap from the bathroom, something from the recycle bin, a shirt from the closet. He doesn't destroy, just carries things. He usually has a toy in his mouth as he is walking around. Speck is good on leash and rides nicely in the car. He needs to learn to jump in on his own. He would be a fantastic and energetic adventure partner. Speck spent most of his time outside before he came to his foster home, so he is learning to be more gentle inside. A new home has to be ready to remind him not to run over the couch. His new person also must be patient and gentle since he has a soft temperament. Speck is a sweet and goofy puppy who is often checking in to see what his person is doing. He will move into your line of sight if he wants something, and often leans into his person. If he is being naughty, like chasing a cat, he also knows to not look at you. Speck is a big snuggler who loves belly rubs. He also loves that water comes out of the hose! He can get into a loop if left to his own devices but is easily redirected, so he needs a home who will keep him busy and give him plenty of things to keep his mind busy. Speck is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. Adopters must be able to meet and adopt in SoCal. We do not ship our dogs. A vet reference and home visit are required.
