You'd never know that super senior Rufus is 11 years old-he looks and acts like a dog still in his prime! He's a handsome standard dachshund with lots of curiosity looking for a forever home to live out his golden years. Rufus is a one-person kind of guy and would do well in a home with someone who is experienced in training. He responds well to clear boundaries and commands from someone with a strong/'alpha' presence. He's very curious-he will follow you around to see what you're up to and will get up to check out sounds (he has amazing hearing!) but is also content to curl up in his bed at your feet for a nap most of the time. He would enjoy a home with a yard that he can safely explore. He's very eager to receive affection and can get a little jealous, so he'd likely do best if he's the only pet in the home, though he does not show aggression towards other dogs or cats. He can be a little grumpy about his personal space and belongings-he's reactive to being asked/pushed/pulled off of furniture or having things taken away from him. He likely has a history of being fed people food which has led to him begging and demanding when his humans eat. An environment with clear boundaries and mutual respect is essential to keeping these behaviors in check. Rufus is house-trained, neutered, and microchipped. He is anxious to be a loyal, sweet companion to the right owner who is willing to put time and patience into helping him feel secure, safe and confident. Rufus is fostered in Hamilton, VA.
