About Buddy

Adoption Fee: $400
Saint Bernard / Great Pyrenees
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Buddy is a 4 year old, rough coated Saint Bernard /Great Pyrenees mix, who came to the Saints and Angels rescue family in April as a behavioral case. We have been working very hard on his training and rehabilitation plan which we suspect he will be ready within the next several weeks, so we are now openly accepting applications for his forever home! Name: Buddy Age: 4 yrs Breed: Saint Bernard/Great Pyrenees mix Location: Oklahoma City Adoption NATIONWIDE with delivery available! Buddy is a 4 year old Saint Bernard/Great Pyrenees mix male, who came to us from Georgia. He lived with an elderly couple on 20 acres free roaming the land and was an outside only dog. He did not ever meet people, see a vet or have any socialization with humans. He was extremely protective of his territory, his humans, his home and had major stranger aggression. He is a small male at around 115 pounds at 4 years old. He is fully grown and has the most remarkable beautiful red & white coat, which is long all over including a thick neck mane, long underbelly and leg feathers. He definitely emits true guardian behavior, herding, patrolling his territory, being fiercely loyal and protective of his environment. Upon arrival, he took on the alpha male role in my home over my pack of 6, he commanded their respect from day two and they obliged. He is fantastic with all my dogs and my cat. He loves to 'cave' or sleep under things like in a cave. He patrols the home and yard like a Great Pyrenees and would make anyone an amazing guardian and companion. Adjusting to indoor life happened very easily. He followed with my pack and loves laying on the couch or the bed and absolutely loves to cuddle on the couch with you. He truly is a total lover to those he trusts and bonds with! When seeking affection he will walk up and lift his paw as if requesting a 'shake' but this is his way of just asking for love. He will also block and herd you if he wants attention when up and about. He is fiercely protective of his territory, but has learned to warm up to new people coming into the home if done slowly and shown that they are not a threat. We are working on introducing him outside of the home to people and allowing him to walk into the home with them and this seems to be much easier for him to warm up. When I take him out of the home, he is a whole different dog! We walk every day twice a day in my very busy neighborhood and he pays no attention to the other people walking, riding bikes or children playing. He is completely muzzle trained, walks amazing on leash in heel position or on a relaxed lead, knows his basic commands very well and does great with sit, down, place and his stay is getting stronger every day! He is crate trained but does whine in the crate, so when guests are around we put him in a bedroom and he does perfect there - he is not destructive, does not whine/bark and does not paw or scratch at the doors. When taken in public with our female Saint who is extremely people/dog friendly, he feeds off of her confidence and trusts her judgment, so he relaxes and does very well in public with her. We have used her to help introduce him to strangers and walk him around in public and this has given him the best success! He absolutely loves to ride in the car and go bye-bye! He has met a few new dogs at the fence and met our trainer's dog on leash and did incredibly well. He doesn't do well with super hyper puppy energy, he will correct this behavior appropriately. When he met Diesel our 10 month old Saint puppy, he corrected his excitable behaviors. He had no issue with other dogs that have a calm demeanor or have good manners, he showed a lot of interest in mature dogs that were calm like him. We believe he would do best with dogs that are past the excitable puppy stage and truly think he would love a female companion dog. He has learned to play chase and enjoys wrestling with his other foster dogs. He pays no attention to the cat in the home. We have been working on desensitizing him with body handling, nail cutting, brushing, etc. and he has come so far! He will need someone who will be patient with grooming him and taking it slow as he gets very nervous when his nails are being cut.. I am also cleaning his ears on a consistent basis now, whereas when he arrives he would snap at me if I touched them. He absolutely loves being brushed now and needs daily brushing to keep his coat from matting and in good condition. He is truly a sweet, gentle giant soul that can stare right into your heart with his beautiful eyes! He needs a home without any children under 16 and an experienced owner that will continue his behavioral training plan we have him on. If you are looking for a Saint Bernard or mix, we always have them coming in as we rescue & deliver Nationwide! Please email us for an application so we can work on finding you the perfect match.
