About Blaze

Lab / Poodle
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Stop the presses, Blaze is finally officially available for adoption! Before you jump to apply, please make sure you read all of the information on him carefully! We understand that as a young doodle he is likely to receive many applications, but because of his history, Blaze will need a specific home and it is our job to be as responsible as possible when placing him for adoption. ? Blaze is a 3 year old labradoodle who came to us as an owner surrender. As loved as he was in his previous home, it was not the right fit for him. The family had many children and unfortunately over the years Blaze had several instances where he nipped at children, at times breaking the skin. Each of these incidents involved the children attempting to interact with him either while he was sleeping or while he had a high quality food item he guarded. We have spent the last month working with him and thoroughly evaluating his behavior to determine if he is a dog that would be safe to rehome. He has been living with our dog training in her own home so she could see if he has any unpredictability to his behavior. After a great deal of time and consideration we have determined that Blaze is not only safe to rehome, but that he is very likely to THRIVE in a new home environment without children! ? Blaze is a very sweet, affectionate and gentle dog, but he has clear boundaries that he needs to have respected. If he is sleeping, he doesn't want to be disturbed, grabbed, or hugged. If he has an item, such as a bone or treat he is chewing on, he doesn't want anyone to try to take it from his mouth, however he will happily trade it for a toy or treat! We absolutely will not rehome him to a family with children. Any family interested in adopting him will also be required to come for a minimum of three visits to our farm location to meet him, meet with our trainer, and be fully educated on how to best manage his behavior in the home to set him and his new family up for success. ? Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's talk about how incredible this dog is! Blaze is 100% housebroken and crate trained. He loves other dogs and could live with another dog happily as long as they don't try to take toys directly from his mouth (he is happy to play tug with them and share a toy as long as he is the one to start the game). Blaze is well behaved and relaxed in the home and even has spent time in our barn office and has been perfectly happy to entertain himself while we work. Blaze has the perfect amount of energy! If you want to go for a run, he's there; but want to cuddle on the couch and he is there too! He loves to play fetch and is easily entertained with simple tennis balls. Blaze also loves the water and often dips his toes in the ponds on our farm. ? If you think you are the right home for Blaze, please apply at waywardranch.org. Our preference would be to place him in a home within 2 hours drive of our facility in Kerhonkson, NY, with a fenced in yard and maybe another dog. We are open to compromising on some of these points for the perfect home, but we absolutely will not place him in a home with anyone under 21 years old.
