About Dixie

Hampton Roads adopter ONLY. Dixie is a playful 4 year old Yorkie. She is dog selective, so a home without others pets or a home with young, energetic male dogs is necessary. Dixie will attack other dogs if you give them attention. Dixie has a feisty personality and is working on her behavioral issues. An experienced home is a MUST. She cannot go to a home with children. Dixie has ENDLESS energy and must be exercised daily. She would be a great agility dog. Due to a very strong personality and a bite history, Dixie will only be available for adoption to someone who is an experienced dog owner that has dealt with dogs with a dominant nature. She will NOT be allowed into a home with children, grandchildren, or one that babysits children or has children frequently visit. The adopter must have a crate, Martingale collar and 6 foot leash. The adopter will be required to enroll in a 6 week obedience course at Canine Training Unlimited (included in the adoption fee). This training facility is located in Chesapeake, VA. The adopter must also be willing to do continued training beyond the 6 weeks if necessary. This is a good dog but thinks she should be allowed to be the boss and needs to have rules and boundaries set and enforced. She needs to learn that bad behavior and 'temper tantrums' need to stop. If you are not willing to do everything it takes to work with this dog and help it become a loving family member then this isn't the dog for you. She is doing well with the current foster but acts up when put into another home. She needs to be given time to decompress and get to know a new owner. We require an application, home check, positive vet reference, and that all past and present animals in the home are fixed, vaccinated, and current on heartworm prevention. Current and past pets must be indoor only and may not have access to the yard unaccompanied. Because our animals live in private foster homes as opposed to a shelter, we require an approved application before setting up a meet and greet. Adoption fee is based on the age of the dog being adopted. Adopters aged 65+ are encouraged to adopt dogs aged 8 and older.
